Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class healthcare professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. The Department of Family & Community Medicine has played a leading role in fellow, resident, and medical student education since 1974 and continues to focus on improving the health of members of our Cincinnati community and beyond, with a special focus on medically underserved patients. With faculty expertise in areas such as primary care research, palliative care, geriatrics, global health and integrative medicine, the department is advancing the college's commitment to cultivating learning environments, fostering research and scholarship, and providing innovative patient care.

The UC College of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine is seeking an Adjunct Assistant Professor (25% FTE) who will be the new course co-director for the Fundamentals of Doctoring (FOD) course series, to begin in July 2025. The Fundamentals of Doctoring course series is a longitudinal pre-clerkship experience for M1/M2s that focuses on teaching the fundamentals of doctoring and developing students’ identity as a physician. This course provides students with their first exposure to clinical medicine. The overall goal of FOD is to help students prepare for M3 clerkships and beyond by learning and acquiring the clinical skills and knowledge used in nearly every encounter that are foundational to patient care.

Essential Functions

General:

  • Attend monthly meetings of the Phase 1 (M1/M2) Curriculum Committee Meeting and meet with Phase I Curriculum Director on a quarterly basis and/or more or less frequently as determined by course director needs.
  • Provide support in the design, integration, and assessment of the curriculum for FOD for Cincinnati Medicine.
  • Form and maintain strategic partnerships with other pre-clinical and clinical program directors to achieve the successful design, integration and assessment of FOD.
  • Align the FOD Curricular structure with the Cincinnati Medicine Program Objectives and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs).
  • Design integrated assessments that align with the learning outcomes for FOD.
  • Support relationships with community preceptors that include regular meetings, site visits, and general appropriate follow-up.
  • Communicate with other pre-clerkship and clinical program directors to ensure that there are minimal gaps and redundancies.
  • Provide preceptor education and support and address concerns as they arise.
  • Support preceptor recruitment and retention with the assistance of the FOD Program Manager.
  • Contribute to the Continuous Quality Improvement process as required by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) and participate in curricular and program review that pertains to FOD and the entire curriculum.
  • Engage in scholarly activities related to FOD including attendance at national conferences, presentations, and publications.
  • Serve as a preceptor for the Assessment of Core Entrustable Professional Activities (ACEPA).

Course Planning:

  • In conjunction with the Phase 1 Director, discuss any assignment changes/updates prior to implementation and update the course syllabus, using the Office of Curriculum Support (OCS) template, at least four weeks from the start of the course.
  • Communicate any conflicts over preceptor sites to the Phase I Director and Phase 2 Director.
  • Identify course materials that need to be uploaded to LEO software platform by the FOD Program Manager.

Course Delivery and Student Support:

  • Develop a positive rapport with students that encourages discussion of problematic issues or concerns about the course.
  • Develop and maintain a bi-monthly communication strategy with students and provide timely feedback to students on required assessments.
  • Provide assistance for students with academic challenges in coordination with the Office of Student Affairs.
  • Regularly review progress reports provided by the Office of Curriculum Support to monitor student completion of required activities and assignments.
  • Work with the Office of Curriculum Support to set up the logistics of a remediation plan for any student failing the course.

Course Evaluation:

  • Collaborate with Dr. Laura Turner, the Associate Dean for Artificial Intelligence and Educational Informatics, in the analysis of the evaluation data and presentations of the results.
  • Complete the annual course review template and present the course review to Phase 1 (M1/2) Curriculum Committee for feedback and continuous quality improvement.
  • Update the curriculum alignment matrix for curriculum mapping used for the AAMC SCOPE survey on an annual basis.
  • Medical Degree (MD or DO).
  • Unrestricted Ohio Medical License.
  • Board Certification with the American Board of Family Medicine.
