Job description

The School of Computing and Information Science at the University of Maine seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2025.

Our primary research target focus is the broad area of spatial computing, including spatial statistics, GIScience, spatial data science, and spatial AI, but we will consider qualified candidates in all areas in the spatial domain.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Establish and sustain a dynamic research program in the field of expertise, yielding well-placed publications and supported by extramural awards
  • Be an engaging teacher, adviser, and mentor, at the graduate and undergraduate levels, typically offering three courses per year
  • Engage in activities to support inclusive excellence
  • Participate actively in the development of innovative spatial computing curricula and in recruiting students
  • Engage substantively in service to the School, College, University, and profession

Qualifications:

Required:

  • PhD in computer science, geographic information science, information science, geography, or a closely related discipline is required by date of hire
  • Strong research profile as demonstrated by relevant and recent contributions in top peer-reviewed conferences and journals
  • Qualifications and willingness to teach graduate courses in GIS
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Preferred:

  • Research specialization aligned with the broad area of spatial computing, including spatial statistics, GIScience, spatial data science, and spatial AI
  • Qualifications and willingness to teach undergraduate or graduate courses in at least one of introductory and intermediate programming, foundations of computing and information science, computing ethics, and applications of spatial computing
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching in areas of need
  • Documented participation in activities promoting inclusive excellence
  • Record of effective collaboration and involvement in mentoring
  • Evidence of ability to teach across multiple areas of need
  • Record of submitting competitive grants and obtaining extramural funding
  • Record of success in working with students at various levels of preparation

The School of Computing and Information Science is home to undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Human-Centered Technology Design, and New Media, and nine graduate programs, including two Ph.D. programs and several online MS and Certificate programs. SCIS currently has 18 full-time faculty members and enrolls approximately 360 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. The School is a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Computing.
