Qualifications
- New Jersey Principal’s Certificate.
- Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience at the elementary and/or high school level.
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
- Demonstrated strong computer skills and use of social media for educational communication.
REPORTS TO: Principal/Superintendent
JOB GOAL: In accordance with applicable policies and law, the assistant principal supports the principal to provide leadership and management of the school to achieve the district’s goals.
Systems Leadership
- The Assistant Principal assists with implementing the vision for the school, attending to school priorities, monitoring the implementation of rigorous goals, implementing the strategic plan, and inspiring and engaging various stakeholders to adopt and enact the vision and strategic plan.
- The Assistant Principal uses a variety of data to identify a practice or program in need of change, systematically guide staff through the change process, and build consensus as the status quo is challenged to positively impact the culture and performance of the school and district.
- The Assistant Principal uses a variety of data to help develop, manage, appropriate and expend in a timely manner a comprehensive budget limited to a specific assigned program or area that aligns with school and district goals and priorities.
- The Assistant Principal assists with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, mentoring, and retaining highly qualified, appropriately certificated, talented and diverse staff as assigned by the Principal.
- The Assistant Principal develops and implements systems and protocols that create a safe and orderly school environment that nurtures academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being of staff and students. The Assistant Principal is knowledgeable of and implements protocols and procedures to comply with relevant district, county, state and federal laws, mandates, regulations and policies in a timely manner.
Culture and Climate Leadership:
- The Assistant Principal develops and implements ongoing practices to recognize and celebrate hard work, innovative and creative risk taking, good character, exceptional performance, and outstanding accomplishments of students, staff and the school in general.
- The Assistant Principal establishes strong and open lines of two-way communication, multiple opportunities for input, and varied methods of gathering feedback from students, staff, and/or other administrators.
- The Assistant Principal is aware of social, political and controversial undercurrents in the school and institutes collaborative procedures and gathers input to proactively address these concerns and minimize the impact on the educational program.
- The Assistant Principal proactively invests time to build rapport and cultivate productive relationships with students, staff and/or families in an effort to develop and maintain a supportive, respectful and trusting educational learning environment.
Instructional Leadership:
- The Assistant Principal ensures high quality instruction through meaningful interactions and engagements with staff by providing feedback to staff after conducting walkthroughs, completing announced and unannounced formal observations, completing tandem observations, conferencing and conferring with staff, reviewing artifacts, and inspecting evidence of instruction.
- The Assistant Principal ensures high quality instruction by providing meaningful, timely and ongoing verbal and written feedback to and collaborating with teachers and staff regarding research-based instructional practices and student outcomes.
- The Assistant Principal has an understanding of the goals and expectations outlined by grade level and content area in the district curriculum which is aligned to the most recent adopted state standards and works with supervisors to ensure that teachers and staff appropriately implement and adhere to any timelines associated with the district curriculum and guidelines for professional services.
- The Assistant Principal plans, implements and monitors engaging and ongoing professional growth and learning activities that: (1) target effective research-based curriculum, instruction , and assessment practices; (2) enhance the teaching and support staff’s professional capacity to improve student achievement; and (3) positively impact the culture and performance of the school and district.
- The Assistant Principal ensures that the entire staff including the Assistant Principal analyzes and uses multiple data sources on an ongoing basis to make decisions.
Professional And Community Leadership
- The Assistant Principal operates and interacts with individuals and groups in a respectful, honest, and ethical manner while demonstrating good integrity.
- The Assistant Principal supports ongoing professional growth and learning of self through collaboration, practice, inquiry, and participation in engaging professional development activities that: (1) align to CIA needs; (2) improve and enhance his/her professional capacity; and (3) positively impact the culture and performance of the school and district.
- The Assistant Principal recognizes that s/he is part of the district administrative team and supports ongoing team collaboration, interaction, planning, problem solving and participation in engaging professional development activities that have a positive impact on the capacity, productivity, efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
- The Assistant Principal cultivates relationships and develops systems that result in ongoing communication, collaboration, input, and interactive feedback with parents, families, Board of Education members, residents, local colleges/universities and/or business/community leaders that have a positive impact on the culture and performance of the school and district.
- The Assistant Principal performs any other duties that are within the scope of employment and certification, as assigned by the Principal and/or the Superintendent.
