Job summary

McAllister Towing of Virginia is seeking a highly experienced Assistant Port Engineer to join our team. The Assistant Port Engineer is responsible to the Port Engineer and helps ensure fleet readiness, maintenance, and regulatory compliance, including timely data entry and filing of accounts payable documents.

The role includes assisting with training and qualification of vessel engineers, managing maintenance and refurbishment projects, and supervising contractor activity during yard work.

Qualifications

  • Two years as an engineer on tugboats with mechanical engine experience on Detroit Diesel 71 Series, EMD, Fairbanks Morse or Caterpillar engines.
  • Electrical system experience required.
  • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential and TWIC; USCG license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Port Engineer with fleet support for operational readiness and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure vessel engineers are trained, qualified and compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with maintenance, repair, modifications and refurbishment projects of existing fleet.
  • Monitor contractors and shipyards during maintenance/repair projects.
  • Conduct on-site surveys of vessels and equipment to determine maintenance needs.
  • Analyze problems and coordinate with operations personnel to resolve issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
