Job summary

Texas State University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Scenic Design. The candidate will teach both graduate and undergraduate courses and contribute to the MFA design program as a tenure-track or professor of practice hire.

The role includes mentoring student designers, recruiting for the MFA program, and participating in department production season planning. Active scholarly research and service are expected.

Qualifications

• MFA in Theatre Design required for Assistant/Associate ranks.
• Active record of professional scenic design experience in regional and/or commercial theatre.
• Strong CAD skills utilizing industry standard (Schematic, 3D, and Visualization).
• Strong digital and/or hand graphic skills that align with industry standards.

Position Description

The School of Theatre,Dance, and Film at Texas State University seeks anAssistant or Associate Professor of Scenic Design (Tenure Track orProfessor of Practice), starting fall 2027. The successfulcandidate will join a nationally recognized department with adynamic faculty dedicated to a collaborative and immersive approachto teaching graduate and undergraduate students.

Responsibilities

• Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in scenic design andrelated topics which may include drafting, history, analysis, andgraphic skills.
• Mentor and advise graduate and undergraduate student designers realized production work.
• Actively recruit exceptional candidates for the MFA designprogram.
• Participate in department production season planning.
• Collaborate with the Design, Technology, and Management Area in support of current initiatives and new developments.
• Maintain an active agenda of creative and/or scholarly researchincluding occasional designs for department productions.
• Provide service to the School, College, and University,commensurate with rank.

• Strong CAD skills utilizing industry standard (Schematic, 3D,and Visualization).
• Strong digital and/or hand graphic skills that align withindustry standards.
• University/college teaching experience.

Required qualifications for Assistant Professor of PracticeRank

• Bachelor's degree.
• Active record of professional scenic design experience inregional and/or commercial theatre; minimum of 7 years.
• Strong CAD skills utilizing industry standard (Schematic, 3D,and Visualization).
• Strong digital and/or hand graphic skills that align withindustry standards.

Required qualifications for Associate Professor of PracticeRank

• Bachelor's degree.
• Extensive and active record of professional scenic designexperience in regional and/or commercial theatre; minimum of 12years.
• Strong CAD skills utilizing industry standard (Schematic, 3D,and Visualization).
• Strong digital and/or hand graphic skills that align withindustry standards.

The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank andtitle based on university and school established standards.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a secondary design discipline with a preferencefor costume or projection design.
• Experience teaching at the graduate and/or undergraduatelevel.
• Demonstrated mentorship of graduate students and/or assistantdesigners.
• Proven track record of effective collaboration.
• Experience in non-theatrical applications of design (e.g.,themed environment, events).
• Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills suitable foracademic program oversight.
