Department: Civil and EnvironmentalEngineeringSalary: Commensurate with experience
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at theUniversity of Houston (UH) invites applications for a full-time,tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant or AssociateProfessor rank. The Department seeks outstanding candidates whowill establish internationally recognized, externally fundedresearch programs, contribute to undergraduate and graduateeducation, and collaborate across disciplinary boundaries withinthe Department, Cullen College of Engineering, andUniversity. The Department seeks an exceptional scholar to strengthen itsresearch and educational programs in hydrology, hydraulics, earthsystem modeling, watershed science, and water resources. Areas ofresearch interest include, but are not limited to, floods, droughts, hydraulics, hydrodynamics, sediment transport, hurricanes, coastal engineering, water security, weather extremes, infrastructure resilience to hydrologic hazards, and couplednatural-human infrastructure systems. Candidates employing advanced computational, observational, anddata-driven research approaches are especially encouraged to apply.Relevant approaches may include hydrologic and earth systemmodeling, experimental research, remote sensing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will haveopportunities to collaborate with faculty working in environmentalfluid mechanics, water resources, hydrology, natural disasters, hydrodynamics, remote sensing, earth system modeling, and the useof machine learning and high-performance computing to understandextreme weather events such as hurricanes, compound flooding, andcoastal resilience. The position will contribute to undergraduate and graduateinstruction in hydrology and water resources and may developcourses in related areas such as watershed processes, floodprediction, urban and coastal flooding, water infrastructure, andhydrologic extremes. Houston, Texas, and the Gulf Coast provide acompelling setting for research addressing compound floods, hurricanes, coastal processes, water security, and the resilienceof natural and engineered water systems. This position advances the University of Houston ResearchPriorities in Energy, Security and Sustainability through researchaddressing water security, hydrologic extremes, infrastructureresilience, and the impacts of floods, droughts, and hurricanes onnatural and engineered systems, and in Aerospace and Earth andPlanetary Sciences through research on hydrology, earth systemprocesses, watershed science, and coastal change. Researchincorporating remote sensing, advanced modeling, artificialintelligence, and machine learning also aligns with the DigitalFutures and the Human Experience priority.
Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering,Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field by the timeof appointment. Candidates are expected to develop and maintain an internationally recognized and externally funded research program;publish high-impact scholarship; mentor graduate and undergraduateresearchers; contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching; andparticipate in professional and University service. Applicants at the Associate Professor level should demonstrate a strong record of scholarly achievement, externally funded research, graduate student mentorship, and national or international recognition appropriate to the rank. Candidates whose scholarship creates collaborations acrosstraditional disciplinary boundaries and complements existingresearch strengths within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, the Cullen College of Engineering, and the broader University of Houston research enterprise are particularlyencouraged to apply. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications andexperience.
The University of Houston is a Carnegie-designated Tier One publicresearch university recognized with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter forexcellence in undergraduate education. UH serves the globallycompetitive Houston and Gulf Coast region by providing world-classfaculty, experiential learning and strategic industry partnerships.Located in the nation's fourth-largest city and one of the mostvibrant regions in the country, UH enrolls nearly 49,000students. The Cullen College of Engineering is a major center for engineeringresearch and education, with more than $58 million in annualresearch expenditures, more than 200 tenured and tenure-trackfaculty, and extensive research infrastructure supportinginterdisciplinary scholarship. Cullen is ranked among the Top 50public graduate engineering schools in the United States. Locatedwithin one of the nation’s largest engineering and technologyeconomies, the College has strong connections with Houston’senergy, aerospace, health care, and technology sectors, creatingexceptional opportunities for industry partnership, technologytranslation, and research impact. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering conductsinterdisciplinary research aimed at advancing the sustainabilityand resilience of natural and built environments. Its approximately20 tenure-track faculty members work across environmentalengineering, hydrosystems, geosensing, geotechnical and structuralengineering, and mechanics, using advanced sensing, computationalmodeling, and other emerging technologies. Houston and the GulfCoast provide a distinctive living laboratory for research on watersystems, flooding and coastal hazards, infrastructure, environmental quality, and urban resilience, with substantialopportunities for collaboration with public agencies, industry, andother research institutions.
Employees are expected to have a home address in the state of Texas for the duration of their appointments. Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidates. All positions at the University of Houston System are security-sensitive and will require a criminal history check.
