Job description

At Ports America, the Assistant Operations Manager - M&R is part of the front-line management team responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance and repair of customer shipping equipment.


The Assistant Operations Manager participates in developing and achieving operational and financial goals, embodying Ports America Values: Safety, Integrity, Pursue Excellence, Create Happiness, Connect, and One Team in all communication, behavior, and business dealings.


Essential Duties:



  • Ensure department staff demonstrate customer service principles and complete all assigned tasks.

  • Develop and implement operating plans to improve customer service, productivity, safety, and quality.

  • Operate within approved fiscal budgets and cost objectives.

  • Schedule and order union labor to ensure safe, cost-effective, and efficient repairs and services.

  • Collaborate with customers and DWPS staff to determine needs, provide expertise, and ensure satisfaction.

  • Maintain communication with supervisors through reports and updates on operational status.

  • Implement safety, accident prevention, and workers' compensation programs; train labor regularly to reduce incidents.

  • Manage union contracts and labor relations to promote productivity and policy adherence.

  • Ensure company assets are well-maintained with minimal downtime.

  • Select and evaluate outside contractors and vendors for quality and cost-effectiveness.

  • Complete work orders and reports accurately and timely.

  • Be available for after-hours emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Attend terminal operations and safety meetings.

  • Oversee maintenance and repair operations daily.

  • Manage roadability operations for labor efficiency and customer service.

  • Ensure accurate and timely M&R billing.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.

  • Experience with Computerized Operating Systems.

  • Obtain a TWIC Card from the Department of Homeland Security.

  • Valid US Driver's License.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes.

  • Understanding of cargo stowage and stability; proficiency in MS Office.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Effective time management and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong planning, organization, and leadership skills.

  • Decisiveness and quick operational response.


Physical Attributes:



  • Climb ladders on vessels multiple times per shift.

  • Work around ships and terminal equipment.

  • Adapt to changing weather conditions.

  • Operate in environments with moving equipment; hazards may be present.

  • Lift, push, or pull up to 30 lbs.
