Job summary

Mid-City Scrap, LLC. in Wesport, Massachusetts is seeking an Assistant Operations Manager to oversee yard, shredder and ELV processing, driving safety, efficiency and environmental compliance.

This hands-on leadership role will supervise from the yard and coordinate daily with department leads. Schedule: Mon–Fri 11am–7pm with Saturday on rotation. Requires 5–7 years in metal recycling and MA Hoisting license 2a1c; English/Spanish bilingual is a plus.

Qualifications

• 5-7 years of experience in metal recycling, scrap processing, heavy industrial operations, or similar environment.
• Prior supervisory or lead experience in a yard, shredder, ELV, or processing operation.
• MA Hoisting license 2a1c is required.
• Familiarity with OSHA and environmental regulations related to recycling operations.

Responsibilities

• Assist in managing day-to-day yard operations, including shredding, downstream and yard material flow.
• Coordinate daily and weekly production priorities with all department Leads.
• Monitor throughput, downtime, and material flow to support production targets and minimize bottlenecks.
• Step in to supervise operations during the Operations Manager’s absence.
• Coordinate with EHS Specialist & HR to ensure a strong safety culture and enforce safety policies.
• Participate in safety meetings, audits, incident investigations, and corrective action plans.
• Ensure environmental compliance related to ELV processing, fluid removal, depollution, stormwater, and housekeeping standards.
• Operate heavy equipment including material handlers and front loaders as needed.
• Motivate and engage the team to ensure safety, production and compliance.
• Support implementation of continuous improvement initiatives and operational best practices.

About this position

Description: The Assistant Operations Manager provides direct operational oversight across yard, shredder, and ELV processing while reinforcing safety, production efficiency, environmental compliance, and employee accountability. The Assistant Operations Manager serves as a key link between frontline supervisors and the Operations Manager, ensuring consistent execution of operational plans, policies, and performance expectations. This is an active, hands-on managerial role, leading the team from the yard. The primary schedule for this position will be Monday- Friday, 11am-7pm, Saturday availability is required to adhere to a rotating schedule.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in managing day-to-day yard operations, including shredding, downstream and yard material flow.

• Motivate and engage the team to ensure safety, production and compliance.
• Reinforce proper PPE use, equipment operation, and safe work practices.
• Support implementation of continuous improvement initiatives and operational best practices.

Requirements

• 5-7 years of experience in metal recycling, scrap processing, heavy industrial operations, or a similar environment.
• Prior supervisory or lead experience in a yard, shredder, ELV, or processing operation.
• MA Hoisting license 2a1c
• Strong working knowledge of ELV depollution, shredder feed preparation, and ferrous/non-ferrous segregation.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental compliance.
• Ability to lead, motivate, and hold teams accountable.
• Familiarity with OSHA and environmental regulations related to recycling operations.
• Mechanical aptitude or experience working alongside maintenance teams.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed outdoors in an industrial environment with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
• Requires standing, lifting, and operating machinery for extended periods.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
