Job description

Purpose

The MEP Assistant Superintendent supports the MEP Superintendent in the daily field coordination and oversight of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems on commercial construction projects. This role is hands‑on in the field—monitoring progress, coordinating MEP trade partners, and supervising quality and safety performance each day. The MEP Assistant Superintendent keeps safety front and center, ensures crews have the information they need to stay efficient, and helps maintain smooth operations throughout each phase of construction.

Essential Responsibilities
MEP Coordination & Trade Management
  • Assist the MEP Superintendent in coordinating mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection trade partners on‑site
  • Monitor MEP trade partner progress daily; identify and escalate issues that could impact schedule or quality
  • Participate in MEP coordination meetings and BIM/clash detection sessions to ensure constructability and resolve spatial conflicts
  • Support preconstruction meetings for MEP trades, ensuring scope of work is understood and expectations are communicated
  • Help manage MEP trade partner sequencing and work area assignments to maintain productivity and minimize rework
  • Review and understand MEP contract drawings; identify discrepancies between disciplines (mechanical vs. electrical vs. plumbing vs. fire protection vs. architectural/structural)
Schedule Support
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of MEP‑specific schedules, including look‑ahead schedules and pull planning sessions
  • Track MEP milestones and communicate progress or delays to the project team
  • Coordinate material deliveries for MEP systems, ensuring trades have what they need when they need it
  • Monitor long‑lead MEP equipment procurement timelines (chillers, generators, switchgear, AHUs, etc.)
Quality Control
  • Support the three‑phase inspection process for MEP installations
  • Conduct daily field walks to verify MEP rough‑in, above‑ceiling, and finish‑out work meets plans, specifications, and RO quality standards
  • Assist with MEP punch list creation, tracking, and resolution
  • Ensure MEP mock‑ups are completed and approved before full‑scale installation begins
  • Coordinate and track MEP‑related inspections with AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) and third‑party inspectors
Safety
  • Enforce RO safety policies and OSHA standards on all MEP work activities
  • Participate in weekly safety inspections and toolbox talks
  • Identify and address unsafe conditions or practices immediately
  • Ensure MEP trade partners maintain compliance with site‑specific safety plans, including LOTO (Lock Out/Tag Out), confined space, and hot work protocols
Startup & Commissioning Support
  • Assist with MEP system startup activities, functional testing, and commissioning coordination
  • Support the MEP Superintendent in managing the turnover of MEP systems to the owner, including documentation and training coordination
  • Track and verify completion of commissioning punch list items
Administrative & Communication
  • Maintain daily logs documenting MEP activities, manpower, and progress
  • Assist in reviewing and implementing MEP submittals and shop drawings
  • Communicate effectively with the project team, design team, and trade partners
  • Participate in staff meetings, OAC meetings, foreman’s meetings, and coordination meetings as directed
Qualifications
Required
  • 2–5 years of commercial construction field experience, with direct exposure to MEP systems
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems and installation methods
  • Ability to read and interpret MEP construction drawings, specifications, and shop drawings
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • OSHA 30‑Hour certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire)
  • Proficiency with construction technology, including Procore, Bluebeam, and mobile devices for digital drawing management
Preferred
  • Experience with a reputable commercial general contractor
  • Familiarity with BIM coordination processes and tools (Navisworks, ACC/BIM 360)
  • Experience with MEP system startup and commissioning
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Science, Construction Management, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • CPR/First Aid certification
