Big 5 Sporting Goods - Store Manager Trainee

With over 400 stores throughout the western United States, Big 5 Sporting Goods is the neighborhood store that gets you ready to play. Manager Trainees gain knowledge and experience necessary for promotion to management positions under the guidance of experienced personnel.

As a Manager Trainee, duties include personal or subordinate-performed tasks such as customer sales and service, directing customers, answering phones, providing product descriptions, proposing add-on sales, checking and retrieving merchandise, cleaning, restocking, and organizing the sales floor. This entry-level position is designed to be transitory, typically lasting 6-18 months before promotion, supported by a comprehensive training program aimed at developing management skills.

Ideal candidates are enthusiastic, energetic, sports-minded with solid customer service backgrounds or relevant educational paths. Enthusiasm for our products is essential. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate store successfully in the absence of the Store Manager
• Drive sales and customer engagement
• Open and close the store
• Oversee footwear, advertising programs, and other departments
• Perform sales, merchandising, and ensure policy compliance
• Handle customer inquiries via phone
• Set promotional signage and perform other duties as assigned
• Enforce company policies
• Coach, counsel, and discipline employees as needed
• Learn and describe products to customers
• Propose add-on sales and manage merchandise organization and inventory control

Minimum Requirements

• Must be 21 years or older
• High School diploma, GED, or relevant experience
• Basic organizational and math skills
• Willing to undergo E-Verify process
• Ability to lift light to moderate loads with or without accommodation
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills

California pay scale: $16.65 - $19.50/hour depending on location.
