Job summary

Aviagen is seeking an experienced Assistant Hatchery Manager to support the Hatchery Manager in planning, developing, and implementing policies for hatchery operations, ensuring goals and profitability.

The role involves direct operational planning for egg production and chick production, compliance with company policies, and coordination with maintenance, QA, and regulatory requirements, while driving safety and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or 8 years equivalent education/experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of hatchery experience or related poultry industry experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisor experience in a similar environment.
  • Extensive maintenance knowledge (electrical, mechanical, PLC operations, heating and cooling, hydraulics).
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation, State, and Federal laws.
  • Advanced poultry science knowledge.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and motivate people.
  • Advanced knowledge of math functions and skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial terms and reporting.
  • Practical computer skills with MS Office programs.
  • Advanced organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Sound work ethic, honesty, and moral character.
  • Ability to interpret data and draw logical conclusions.
  • Critical thinking for routine and non-routine problems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate hatchery activities: egg pick-up and deliveries, care, incubation and hatching, grading, vaccination, and preparation and shipping of chicks.
  • Manage maintenance of the facility and equipment.
  • Manage chick care, maintenance, packing, and transfer activities.
  • Oversee the Quality Assurance/Quality Control program.
  • Communicate with and assist the Breeder Manager to project egg needs.
  • Coordinate with contract service providers where applicable.
  • Maintain weekly hatch schedules, ensuring proper numbers of birds to the processing plant.
  • Monitor and manage facility equipment and repairs, addressing maintenance issues.
  • Maintain hatchery sanitation and establish safety policies and procedures.
  • Keep current knowledge of industry trends and hatchery equipment operations.
  • Manage reports, review and analyze them, and perform corrective measures.
  • Manage the hatchery budget.
  • Manage the quality of the Embrex program.
  • Manage the Animal Welfare Program.
  • Ensure safety and corporate guidelines on business ethics are followed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Job Description Summary

Aviagen is currently hiring an experienced Assistant Hatchery Manager who will be primarily responsible for assisting the Hatchery Manager in planning, developing, and implementing policies and practices for hatchery operation, ensuring goal attainment and profitable operation. The role includes direct strategic operational plans in hatching eggs and chick production, compliance with all company policies, NCC Animal Guidelines, and local, state, and federal policies, laws and regulations, as well as ISO and Transportation responsibilities.

  • Minimum 4 years’ progressive hatchery experience or a combination of hatchery and related poultry industry experience.
  • Minimum 2 years’ supervisor experience within a similar environment.
  • Extensive maintenance knowledge (electrical, mechanical, PLC operations, heating and cooling, hydraulics, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation, State, and Federal Laws.
