Job summary

The Pittsburgh Pirates are seeking an Assistant Manager – Field Operations for Florida Operations to oversee day-to-day field maintenance at LECOM Park and Pirate City. You will supervise the Grounds Crew, ensure turf quality and safety, and support budget and turf programs.

Ideal candidates bring baseball field management experience, bilingual English/Spanish ability, and strong scheduling and equipment skills. This role is based on-site in Florida with MLB standards expected.

Qualifications

• Four-year Bachelor’s or two-year Associate in Horticulture or Turfgrass Science.
• Experience in professional baseball field management.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish.
• Must obtain FL Commercial Pesticide license within six months.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Experience with equipment maintenance and inventory.
• Proficient with MS Office (Word/Excel/Outlook).

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage Grounds Crew, including recruitment, training and scheduling.
• Inspect and maintain turf machinery, report issues promptly.
• Fulfill Manager of Field Operations duties in their absence.
• Assist with developing and managing annual budget and capital projects.
• Implement turf maintenance programs for Pirate City and LECOM Park.
• Ensure safety of employees and visitors across sites.
• Manage field maintenance to MLB standards for all fields.

Job Summary

The Assistant Manager of Field Operations for Florida Operations is responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the field at LECOM Park, the fields at Pirate City when the Manager of Field Operations for Florida Operations is not present, and the day-to-day management of a subset of the Grounds Crew employees. The incumbent must be well-versed in turf science and groundskeeping best practices.

Responsibilities

Primary:

• Manage the full time and seasonal Grounds Crew Employees as assigned by the Manager of Field Operations, including but not limited to responsibility for, recruiting, hiring, training, day-to-day schedule and management, time review, assisting in disciplinary processes, and regularly directing employee’s work.
• Inspect machinery before and after use and maintain in workable condition. Repair and report broken items to the Manager of Field Operations.
• Fulfill responsibilities of the Manager of Field Operations in the absence of the Manager of Field Operations.
• Assist with development of and management to yearly budget and all capital projects.
• Assist with development and implementation of turf maintenance program at Pirate City and LECOM Park.
• Maintain all field areas, batting cages and grounds crew shop buildings consistent with the directions of the Manager of Field Operations.
• Ensure safety at Pirate City and LECOM Park for all employees and visitors.
• Develop and implement policies to ensure all equipment used at Pirate City and LECOM Park is efficiently and effectively maintained.
• Maintain the baseball field at LECOM Park and all baseball fields at Pirate City consistent with Major League expectations and requirements.
• Assist with chemical treatment to all fields.
• Keep all common areas and landscaped areas in top condition.
• Oversee the operations consistent with OSHA and other safety requirements and maintain the list of all caustic materials per OSHA requirements.
• All other duties as assigned by Manager of Field Operations for Florida Operations.

Secondary:

• Assist with events at PNC Park as assigned.
• When assigned, responsible for acting as Manager on Duty when field(s) are used for supplemental events at LECOM Park or Pirate City.
• Coordinate with various corporate departments on the use of the field at LECOM Park for in-game promotions, sales and marketing events, corporate partnership activation and other requests.

Qualifications

Required:

• Four-year Bachelor’s Degree or Two-year Associates Degree in Horticulture, Turfgrass Science, or equivalent experience and knowledge of environmental turfgrass management practices including pest, disease and weed management.
• Prior professional baseball or high collegiate baseball field management experience.
• Prior experience in field management for non-baseball events.
• Must obtain a FL Commercial Pesticide and Fertilizer Applications License within six months of hire.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Supervisory experience, at least three years preferred.
• Bilingual and conversant in both Spanish and English.
• Experience with equipment maintenance.
• Experience with managing inventory.
• Experience with time management and scheduling systems.
• Regular participation in continuing education, including but not limited to, field days, workshops, and seminars.
• Microsoft Office Suite Applications (Word, Outlook, Excel).
