Job summary

Qualdoc in Allentown, PA seeks a hands-on Assistant Manager to lead field operations supporting derailment response, lifting, railcar repair, and track maintenance projects. You will partner with Supervisors, ensure safe, on-time project execution, and coordinate with customers in fast-paced environments.

The ideal candidate has strong leadership, field ops experience, a safety focus, and the ability to solve problems under pressure.

Qualifications

  • Preferred experience in railroad, heavy equipment, or related field operations.
  • Strong knowledge of DOT and FRA regulations.
  • Class A or B CDL preferred.

Assistant Manager – Field Operations

Locations: Allentown, PA | Candor, NC
Job Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Starting Salary: $100,000/year (Higher salary available depending on experience)
CDL: Non-CDL position; Class A or B preferred

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on, experienced Assistant Manager to help lead field operations supporting emergency derailment response, specialty lifting, railcar repair, and track maintenance projects.

This position provides hands-on leadership in fast-paced, time-sensitive field environments. You will support Supervisors, help ensure safe and efficient project execution, work directly with customers, and respond to operational challenges and emergency service needs.

The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, field operations experience, a commitment to safety, and the ability to problem-solve effectively in demanding environments.


Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support Supervisors in executing multiple field projects safely, efficiently, and in compliance with DOT/FRA regulations and company standards.
  • Assign work, monitor progress, and ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to customer expectations.
  • Provide hands-on leadership in the field, including coaching, problem-solving, and responding to emergency service calls as needed.
  • Conduct regular site visits to evaluate safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Identify operational risks and implement effective solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with railroad customers, field partners, and regulatory agencies through proactive communication and coordination.
  • Train, mentor, and develop team members.
  • Support hiring, performance evaluations, and ongoing employee coaching.
  • Assist with workforce planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of payroll, labor hours, equipment usage, and project documentation.
  • Monitor equipment condition and coordinate maintenance or replacement to ensure operational readiness.
  • Support business growth through customer engagement, relationship-building, and participation in industry events.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Preferred experience in railroad, heavy equipment, or related field operations.
  • Strong knowledge of DOT and FRA regulations.
  • Class A or B CDL preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience managing teams in field environments.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment, including cranes, trucks, excavators, and similar equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret crane load charts and rigging requirements.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead, coach, and influence others.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn operational software systems.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to successfully complete required safety and certification programs.
Physical & Work Requirements
  • Frequent overnight travel required.
  • On-call availability with the ability to report within 1 hour when required.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
  • Extended work hours, including weekends and holidays, as operational needs require.
  • Active, hands-on role involving walking and working in railroad environments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
