Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking a dedicated intern to join the Learning Assistance Program (LAP) team as an Assistant Learning Specialist. The role provides one-on-one academic support to student-athletes facing education‑impacting disabilities or at academic risk, with a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.

The incumbent will contribute to written reports, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and work closely with the LAP staff under the Assistant Director.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a related master's degree, active progress towards completing a master's degree, or an active plan to obtain a master's degree or possess an equivalent level of training and or experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with the ability to develop written reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various stakeholders in a time sensitive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one academic support to student-athletes.
  • Assist LAP team with educational accommodations and strategies.
  • Maintain flexible scheduling including nights and weekends as required.

This full-time internship experience is designed to provide an individual the opportunity to grow and develop the necessary skills needed to advance their career into the field of student‑athlete academic support. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Learning Assistance Program (LAP), the Assistant Learning Specialist will work with the LAP team to provide one‑on‑one support to student‑athletes who have education‑impacting disabilities or who are academically at‑risk. This position will require the ability to work a flexible schedule, to include nights and weekends

Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

No more than 40 hours/week and will not work during the following periods: November 23-27, 2026; December 22, 2023-January 1, 2027; March 6-14, 2027.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
