The Assistant in Training (AIT) and Assistant Manager position’s primary responsibility is to fulfill our mission statement, “to create the most enjoyable shopping experience possible for our Guests.” Additionally, AIT and Assistant Managers perform a variety of sales, merchandising, and operational tasks assigned by store management (e.g., cashiering, merchandise display and pulls, register procedures, and routine cleaning of facilities). They work directly with the Store Manager and Leadership Team to develop sales, recruit new Teammates, and provide leadership. The AIT and Assistant Manager will also share responsibility for training and motivating Teammates and act as the Store Manager in their absence. The Assistant Manager position is a progression from the AIT role, including additional high-level duties specific to that position, though most job duties and responsibilities are shared.

Sales Generation and Guest Service

  • Greet Guests with a friendly, engaging attitude, and consistently provide legendary service
  • Eager and assertive in answering questions regarding the store and merchandise
  • Recommend, select, and help locate or obtain merchandise based on Guest needs and desires
  • Anticipate and fulfill Guest needs by suggesting additional items and creating a wardrobing experience
  • Demonstrate product knowledge and sales education, sharing that knowledge with the team
  • Maintain knowledge of current sales, promotions, policies, and security practices
  • Consistently perform in personal sales and impact Teammates’ presentations using the Sales Presentation Guide (SPG)
  • Achieve personal sales goals (per hour, average sales, total net sales) set by Store Management
  • Provide legendary service across all store areas: Front 5, sales floor, fitting rooms, and register
  • Understand exchange and return procedures and leverage them as showmanship opportunities
  • Use the SPG daily to meet sales goals
  • Meet or exceed performance standards in all Buckle business metrics and guest loyalty programs
  • Expand Guest selection through inventory management tools and apps
  • Build and maintain good Guest relationships to develop a client-based business
  • Lead by example with showmanship, customer service, and attentiveness
  • Recognize and communicate Guest Levels with the Team
  • Ask business-driven and showmanship questions regularly to Managers and Team
  • Be coachable; welcome feedback to improve sales presentations
  • Perform leadership actions and uphold high standards consistently
  • Plan sales goals with the Store Manager
  • Demonstrate ownership of store’s sales performance (Sales, Average Sale, Business Builders, Denim)
  • Passion for product education and showmanship to drive results

Teammate Recruiting, Training, and Development

  • Recognize recruiting opportunities using various tools and referrals
  • Coach and build relationships through Guest Loyalty and Guest Preferred programs
  • Lead, motivate, and educate new Teammates to meet Buckle standards
  • Maintain a positive attitude and foster a positive store culture
  • Demonstrate personal dress code aligned with current fashion trends
  • Participate effectively in daily setup, training, and reviews using the Performance Tracker
  • Motivate Teammates to complete daily tasks
  • Show passion for denim showmanship and fit cards, influencing results
  • Create results within your department, balancing all actions and check-ins
  • Execute department calendar actions and track progress
  • Engage Guests with product demonstrations
  • Update and communicate with the team regularly
  • Remember and use Guest names effectively
  • Explain merchandise benefits for both Gals and Guys’ sides
  • Partner with Store Manager on educational focus and delegate accordingly
  • Support all segments to meet business goals
  • Assist in recruiting store staffing needs
  • Explain pay and benefits clearly
  • Keep contact lists updated, recruiting top talent
  • Train and coach on leadership playbook and characteristics
  • Identify and address teammate training needs
  • Own zone and project recognition, execute zone ownership questions
  • Partner with Store Manager on zone demonstrations and reviews
  • Ensure visual standards are maintained on the floor and backroom

Operations

  • Work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts
  • Use planners and complete opening/closing checklists
  • Recognize security risks and handle theft prevention
  • Follow Loss Prevention guidelines and POS procedures
  • Handle calls professionally from Corporate Office
  • Maintain a positive attitude in challenging situations
  • Adhere to policies on payments, returns, exchanges, and Loss Prevention
  • Navigate and utilize store tools effectively
  • Provide feedback on merchandise handling and policy violations
  • Complete all scheduled shifts and cover when needed
  • Keep store organized, clean, and shoppable
  • Communicate with Corporate Office regarding store concerns
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and ethical standards
  • Complete all hiring paperwork promptly
  • Execute opening/closing checklists and manage freight, markdowns, and inventory
  • Build relationships with Corporate Departments for effective store operation
  • Monitor and maintain store supplies
  • Handle emergencies in the absence of the Store Manager

Supervisory and Leadership

  • Give and receive feedback professionally

  • Conduct interviews and support team development

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED; 1-3 months retail experience or equivalent.

Physical Demands

Regularly stand, walk, handle, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and talk/hear; occasionally sit. Must lift/maneuver 50 lbs. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, and focus adjustment. Work environment is typically moderate noise.
