Job summary

City of New Braunfels, TX, is seeking a motivated individual to join the Parks & Recreation Department in managing Golf Programs at Landa Park Golf Course. You will assist in daily Pro Shop operations, provide professional golf instruction, and ensure exceptional guest experiences while enforcing course rules.

The role requires PGA PAT Level completion and active pursuit of PGA membership, with potential for leadership in the Golf Programs Group.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university; OR minimum 5 years golf course experience.
  • PAT level of PGA of America golf management training program and actively working toward PGA membership.
  • PGA Class A membership must be obtained within 4 years of date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provides excellent customer service, hospitality, professional advice and assistance to all patrons; instructs guests in course rules and enforces rules and regulations governing golf course usage.
  • Participates in all aspects of the daily Pro Shop operations, including inventory, pricing, display, sales, guest check-in, and tee-time scheduling.
  • Implements and maintains City, department and Golf Course policies and procedures.
  • Manages GHIN handicapping information and assists members with handicap services.
  • Provides golf instruction; develops and conducts clinics and programs; promotes participation in golf.
  • Oversees staff and volunteers and coordinates with the Golf Manager as needed.

The responsibilities you’ll be trusted with:

  • Provides excellent customer service, hospitality, professional advice and assistance to all patrons; instructs guests in course rules and enforces rules and regulations governing golf course usage.
  • Participates in all aspects of the daily Pro Shop operations, including but not limited to: maintaining proper inventory levels, receiving and pricing merchandise, keeping shop supplies current; assisting in the receipt, display, inventory, control, promotion and sales of merchandise; controlling and managing play, ensuring guest check-in and fee collection; utilizing the reservation system and scheduling tee times; assisting with physical upkeep of the Pro Shop, including keeping counter and shop area neat, safe and clean; accurately accounts for cash and receipts at registers in the Pro Shop.
  • Implements and maintains City, department and Golf Course policies and procedures.
  • Manages the Texas Golf Association (TGA) e-clubhouse Golf Handicapping Information Network (GHIN) handicapping system and assists all members with handicap services.
  • Provides golf instruction; develops, organizes, and conducts junior and adult clinics and other programs; promotes and encourages participation in the game of golf.
  • Represents the City of New Braunfels at local, regional or national golf tournaments, as well as plays with members and works on personal game.
  • Supervises and manages the Golf Programs Group in a professional manner in the absence of the Golf Manager.
  • Oversees, schedules and trains outside services staff and volunteers as directed by the Golf Manager.
  • Manages club repair concession.
  • Monitors and reviews trends in golf and public recreation operations and management issues; works closely with golf organizations, community groups, vendors, and regional sports and recreation associations.
  • Responds to requests for information; provides technical information to other recreation program management organizations; research technical issues and recommends solutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role:

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university; OR minimum 5 years golf course experience. Must have passed the PAT level of PGA of America golf management training program and be actively working toward PGA membership. PGA Class A membership must be obtained within 4 years of date of hire.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Passed the PAT and enrolled in Level I of the PGA of America is required.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.

Required Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Professional techniques of playing and teaching golf, golf terminology, and etiquette.
  • Fundamentals, techniques, and skills required for participation in the game of golf.
  • Rules, regulations, player responsibilities, sportsmanship, etiquette and traditions of the game of golf.
  • Techniques and terminology for competition and tournaments.
  • Recent development, trends, literature and other resources for Golf programs.

Required Skill in:

  • Playing the game of golf and instructing all phases of the game to others.
  • Teaching individuals and groups, at the beginning and advanced levels of proficiency.
  • Evaluating market trends in golf sportswear and equipment and explaining the trends to customers.
  • Enforcing course and facilities rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Interpreting and applying Golf course standards and City policies and procedures.
  • Interpreting customer needs and solving customer service and public relations issues.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with City employees, vendors and community organizations and the general public.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing; to prepare clear and concise reports.

Your work environment:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment and on the golf course, in all weather conditions, including inclement weather, and is subject to walking, sitting, standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods of time; and ability to safely pull, push, lift and carry items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
