ASSISTANT GOLF COACH

Position Summary

The Assistant Golf Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Golf Coach in planning, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive golf program at Bernalillo High School. The Assistant Coach will support the development of student-athletes by providing instruction in golf skills, techniques, rules, strategies, and course management while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and a positive team environment.

The Assistant Golf Coach will work collaboratively with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, school administration, student-athletes, families, and other coaching staff to ensure the golf program operates in accordance with district, school, and New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head Golf Coach with planning and implementing practices, matches, tournaments, and other team activities.
  • Provide instruction and coaching in fundamental golf skills, techniques, rules, strategies, and course management.
  • Assist with developing individual golf skills appropriate to the abilities and needs of student-athletes.
  • Teach proper golf etiquette, sportsmanship, safety, and respect for the course and other players.
  • Help establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive team environment.
  • Promote discipline, responsibility, teamwork, sportsmanship, and appropriate conduct.
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, matches, tournaments, travel, and other golf-related activities.
  • Assist with maintaining a safe and organized practice and competition environment.
  • Assist with equipment inventory, maintenance, storage, and distribution.
  • Support the Head Coach in developing practice plans, drills, schedules, and competition strategies.
  • Assist student-athletes with understanding course conditions, club selection, shot selection, and overall course strategy.
  • Assist with evaluating individual and team performance and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Assist with tracking scores, statistics, and other performance information as directed by the Head Coach.
  • Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, school administration, student-athletes, and parents/guardians.
  • Monitor student-athletes' academic progress and encourage them to meet school and eligibility requirements.
  • Model professionalism, integrity, sportsmanship, and appropriate behavior at all times.
  • Follow all district, school, NMAA, and team rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Attend required coaches' meetings, professional development, and athletic department activities.
  • Complete required training, certifications, and safety requirements.
  • Assist with fundraising, team events, community activities, and other program responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assist with transportation and supervision responsibilities associated with practices, matches, tournaments, and team travel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Golf Coach or Athletic Director.

  • Ability to establish appropriate boundaries and maintain professional relationships with student-athletes.
  • Ability to supervise student-athletes and respond appropriately to safety concerns or emergencies.
  • Commitment to supporting student-athletes' academic, athletic, and personal development.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including practices, competitions, tournaments, evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous golf playing or coaching experience preferred.
  • Previous experience working with high school-aged students or student-athletes preferred.
  • Must hold a current New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) coaching license or be able to obtain the required NMPED coaching license prior to the start date.
  • Must meet all applicable district and NMAA requirements for athletic coaches.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks, certifications, and trainings prior to or as required for participation in the program.
Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Demonstrate and teach golf skills and techniques.
  • Walk significant distances on golf courses and athletic facilities.
  • Lift, carry, and move golf equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in practices and golf activities as appropriate.
  • Work outdoors for extended periods of time in varying weather conditions.
  • Respond quickly to student-athlete needs and emergency situations.
Work Environment

The Assistant Golf Coach will work primarily at golf courses, athletic facilities, school facilities, and other locations associated with practices, competitions, and team activities. The position may require frequent evening and weekend work, travel, and extended hours during the athletic season. The coach should be prepared to work outdoors in varying weather and course conditions.
