Assistant Coach - Girls Track (Winter & Spring)
Available: 2026-2027 SY

Title: ASSISTANT COACH

Reports To: Head Coach

Duration: Winter/Spring Season

Salary: New coaches may be granted a maximum of five years experience for documented IHSA experience. Longevity is based on years of coaching regardless of the sport.

Purpose

The job of Assistant Coach is established for the purpose of designing and implementing program activities in accordance with applicable rules and regulations related to the sport; providing supervision of student athletes during all aspects of their participation in the program; using sound instructional techniques in overseeing the program; serving as a positive role model to student athletes and to the community; and to various organizations. Individuals in this job classification are assigned to a position for a specific sport at the Varsity or Junior Varsity level.

Functions

• Analyzes opposition’s strategies for game/event prior to and/or during athletic events to develop game plan.
• Assesses student athletes to provide feedback on performance and determine team placement.
• Attends meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. for information related to the role.
• Develops components of game strategies/plans as requested by Head Coach.
• Evaluates facility and playing field for hazards to reduce risk of injury.
• Instructs student athletes to promote growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
• Maintains records (e.g., statistics, insurance, permission forms, emergency information, schedules, inventories) to comply with district, athletic conference, and state requirements.
• Monitors academic eligibility to ensure IHSA compliance and provide intervention as needed.
• Promotes athletic program (e.g., clinics, camps, community engagement) to increase interest and participation.
• Responds to inquiries from students, parents, staff, media, college representatives, etc.
• Supervises student athletes during all areas of participation to minimize risk of injury.
• Supports other staff of the athletic program to assist in role performance.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills: adapt to changing work priorities; administer first aid; apply laws, codes, policies, and regulations; organize and communicate information.

Knowledge: basic math; interpret technical information; write technical materials; communicate persuasively; understand equipment, injury prevention, IHSA concussion protocols, eligibility guidelines, safety practices.
