Under the direction of the General Manager, the Assistant General Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the hotel to ensure optimal performance, operational efficiency, profitability, and continuous improvement across the Seven Key Result Areas: Guest Service, Employees, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Accounting & Controls, Property Appearance, and Profit/Financial Performance.
The Assistant General Manager provides leadership and direction to hotel staff and works closely with the General Manager and department leaders to achieve operational and financial objectives while maintaining company standards and delivering an exceptional guest experience.
Essential Functions
- Demonstrate and promote a 100% commitment to providing an exceptional experience for both guests and employees.
- Conduct weekly property walkthroughs with the General Manager, including public areas, guest rooms, and back-of-house areas.
- Partner with the Chief Engineer and Executive Housekeeper to inspect, document, and address property condition, maintenance needs, cleanliness, and overall appearance.
- Conduct regular property walks to ensure all areas are clean, maintained, and operating according to company standards.
- Maintain a visible leadership presence in public areas during peak business periods to assist guests and support the operational team.
- Attend and actively participate in staff and departmental meetings.
- Work closely with the General Manager on all areas of hotel operations and assume additional responsibilities based on operational needs, individual strengths, and departmental efficiencies.
- Serve as Manager-On-Duty as assigned and provide leadership coverage throughout the property.
- Assist in maximizing hotel revenues and overall flow-through to GOP in order to meet or exceed budgeted EBITDA.
- Assist the General Manager with the preparation of the annual budget, forecasts, and financial projections within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Monitor labor standards and property-level expenses to maximize efficiency and profitability.
- Review and explain financial performance and assist with reconciliation of assigned financial accounts.
- Monitor collection of in-house guest balances and direct-bill receivables.
- Monitor commission payments, vendor-related financial activity, and the issuance of refund checks.
- Participate in and oversee monthly inventories of supplies and equipment.
- Ensure purchasing remains within budget and is completed through approved vendors and established company procedures.
- Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary expenses while maintaining service and quality standards.
- Partner with the Director of Sales to support and manage hotel sales activities and achieve Rooms Division revenue objectives.
- Establish sales and revenue goals within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Conduct competitive market surveys and assist with maintaining current market knowledge.
- Assist with reservations and sales-related reporting as needed.
- Develop and maintain relationships with local businesses, organizations, and key community contacts to increase hotel visibility and drive business.
- Support sales initiatives designed to increase occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, and overall hotel revenue.
Guest Satisfaction
- Promote and maintain a culture focused on 100% guest satisfaction throughout the property.
- Reinforce guest-service expectations with departmental leaders, supervisors, and hourly associates.
- Ensure guest concerns and service recovery issues are addressed promptly, professionally, and consistently with company standards.
- Monitor guest feedback and ensure appropriate departmental follow-up.
- Ensure all Salt Positive and Negative items receive appropriate departmental responses and follow-up on a daily basis.
- Identify recurring guest concerns and work with department leaders to develop corrective actions and prevent future issues.
Revenue Management
- Complete all required Rooms Division, Revenue Management, and R&I training.
- Maintain current knowledge of hotel selling strategies, market conditions, and revenue-management practices.
- Ensure the Rooms Division consistently follows approved selling strategies and rate guidelines.
- Work with the General Manager and appropriate leadership team members to identify opportunities to improve occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, and overall revenue performance.
Employee Management & Development
- Recruit, interview, and assist in selecting qualified applicants.
- Ensure employees are properly trained in accordance with company standards and departmental requirements.
- Provide clear direction, coaching, motivation, and accountability to hotel employees.
- Communicate company policies, procedures, expectations, and operational updates to the team.
- Assist with conducting regular staff and departmental meetings, including company communications, policy updates, property initiatives, and departmental goals.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Maintain accurate employee personnel records, including hiring documentation, performance evaluations, payroll-related information, benefits information, and required postings.
- Utilize Empower Software for applicant recruitment and employee management.
- Follow all Human Resources procedures, company policies, and requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Conduct coaching and counseling sessions, performance evaluations, performance improvement plans, and disciplinary documentation as appropriate.
- Participate in employee separations and terminations in conjunction with the General Manager and Human Resources.
- Ensure employee-related concerns are addressed promptly and consistently with company policies.
- Mentor and develop Departmental Managers by providing coaching, training, and opportunities to expand their operational knowledge and leadership skills.
- Evaluate departmental strengths and opportunities for improvement and create development opportunities to prepare managers for increased responsibility.
- Encourage cross-training and operational knowledge across all departments.
- Perform duties in all areas of hotel operations as needed to maintain service and operational standards.
Supporting Functions
In addition to the essential functions listed above, the Assistant General Manager may be required to:
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the General Manager or company leadership.
- Assist with special guest requests and unique operational needs.
- Provide operational support in any department when necessary.
- Adhere to all federal, state, local, company, and corporate policies and procedures.
- Maintain a professional leadership presence and represent the hotel and company positively at all times.

QualificationsCommunication

- Ability to read, write, and speak English and comprehend routine instructions, correspondence, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to write professional correspondence, reports, and internal communications.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small-group settings.
- Conversational Spanish is preferred but not required.
Education
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred: College degree in Hospitality, Business, Sales, or a related field.
Computer Skills
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of computers and common business software.
- Ability to effectively use email, word processing, spreadsheet, property-management systems, and other hotel-related software.
- Ability to learn and utilize company-specific systems and technology.
Experience
- Minimum of five years of related hospitality management experience.
The physical requirements described below are representative of those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:
- Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods when required.
- Ability to stand and walk throughout the hotel for extended periods.
- Ability to reach by extending hands and arms in various directions.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, push, pull, and climb stairs as required by hotel operations.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Finger dexterity sufficient to operate computers, keyboards, telephones, and other equipment.
- Ability to see within normal parameters.
- Ability to hear within normal range.
- Ability to move throughout guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house areas, and other hotel facilities as required to perform job duties.
