Job summary

DTCC is seeking a skilled General Counsel to lead litigation, regulatory matters, and employment investigations for its post-trade market infrastructure. You will advise senior leadership, manage outside counsel, and collaborate with Compliance, Risk, HR, and Operations to mitigate risk in a highly regulated financial services environment.

The role requires a JD, NY/NJ Bar admission, and extensive litigation experience.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to and in good standing with the New York or New Jersey Bar.
  • Minimum of 9 years of legal experience with a primary focus on litigation for clients in highly regulated industries.
  • Significant hands-on experience in all phases of litigation, disputes, and internal investigations, including pleadings, discovery, witness preparation, dispositive motions, trial/arbitration, and settlement negotiations.
  • Experience with subpoenas and discovery, including written and electronic discovery, witness interviews, negotiating with opposing counsel, depositions, and discovery hearings.
  • Experience in, or strong commitment to build expertise in, employment law, with a focus on disputes, investigations, claims, litigation, and regulatory and state agency inquiries and proceedings.

The impact you will have in this role

As a member of the General Counsel’s Office, you will play a key role in identifying and mitigating legal risk, and managing litigation, disputes, and regulatory proceedings involving DTCC and its subsidiaries, with a primary focus on DTCC’s post-trade market infrastructure, clearing, settlement, and depository services. You will also provide legal advice to Human Resources on investigations, employee claims, employment litigation, and regulatory and government agency proceedings.

The position is ideal for a strong litigator who is comfortable managing complex matters, working with senior stakeholders, partnering with outside counsel, and developing practical legal strategies in a highly regulated financial services environment.

Your Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage litigation and disputes (both with and without outside counsel), including strategy, risk evaluation, budgets, working cross-functionally to manage discovery, witness preparation, depositions, motion practice, arbitration or trial preparation, and settlement.
  • Manage and resolve pre-litigation disputes, demand letters, government agency and regulatory inquiries, and threatened claims.
  • Assess risk, evaluate litigation exposure, and provide practical, solution-oriented counsel to executives and internal stakeholders.
  • Partner with business leaders, Compliance, Risk, Operations, Human Resources, and other control functions to investigate and resolve complex legal issues.
  • Support factual investigations, document preservation, discovery, witness preparation, settlement analysis, and related litigation activities.
  • Advise on legal and regulatory risk related to DTCC’s role as a financial market infrastructure, including matters relating to clearing, settlement, depository operations, rules, procedures, and member-facing matters.
  • Evaluate employee claims and exposure, and make recommendations regarding case strategy and resolution, including settlement authority within delegated limits.
  • Support employment-related dispute and investigatory matters, including workplace investigations, employee relations issues, employment litigation, administrative claims, disciplinary matters, and separation-related issues.
  • Handle other routine legal matters, ad hoc projects, research and analysis of complex issues and directly engage with internal stakeholders on legal issues as requested.

  • Experience with subpoenas and discovery, including written and electronic discovery, witness interviews, negotiating with opposing counsel, depositions, and discovery hearings.
  • Familiarity with legal holds and document management applications and discovery tools (e.g., Relativity, etc.)
  • Experience in, or strong commitment to build expertise in, employment law, with a focus on disputes, investigations, claims, litigation, and regulatory and state agency inquiries and proceedings.

  • Ability to work in a small-team environment, to work independently, and to multi-task with minimal supervision.
  • Employment law experience is helpful but not required; openness to developing capability in employment law is essential.
  • Strong litigation judgment and the ability to quickly assess legal risk, business impact, and strategic options.
  • Ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, practical advice for non-legal senior stakeholders.
  • Comfort operating in a highly regulated, fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and evolving legal issues.
  • Excellent drafting, analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to partner across Legal, Compliance, Risk, HR, Operations, and business teams.
  • Intellectual curiosity and willingness to broaden beyond a traditional litigation portfolio into employment law and workplace investigations. Prior employment litigation, internal investigations, or employee relations advisory experience preferred.
  • Experience in financial services preferred but not required.
