Job description

Assistant General Counsel

Reports directly to the General Counsel and assists in providing comprehensive legal advice and counsel to senior academic and administrative officers of the College concerning its legal rights and obligations, including litigation and threatened litigation for all units of the College.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret constitutional, statutory and regulatory frameworks relevant to College operations.
  • Respond to public record requests and agency complaints.
  • Manage outside counsel and support litigation in state and federal courts, as well as administrative and regulatory agencies.
  • Provide legal and policy advice in areas such as employment law, student affairs, intellectual property, real‑estate, contracts, organizational governance, affiliated entities, sponsored research, disabilities, drug‑free workplace requirements, IT issues, copyright, defamation, civil rights, sexual harassment, promotion and tenure processes, and fundraising.
  • Conduct research and offer litigation, pre‑litigation services, and strategic advice to College leadership.
  • Adhere to Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and College policies, and update the General Counsel on emerging legal matters.
  • Participate in additional practice areas as assigned, including student life, compliance, governance, procurement, public records, privacy, risk management, and legislative matters.
  • Maintain professional confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in all client interactions.
  • Occasional travel and flexible scheduling as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited law school.
  • Strong academic background.
  • Admission to the Nevada State Bar in good standing.
  • Licensed or ability to obtain a Federal Court license within two months of hire.
  • Four (4) years of legal practice or relevant experience in labor and employment, academic/educational affairs, compliance, civil rights, torts, or constitutional law.
  • Experience advising clients on complex, multifaceted legal issues with government entities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Six (6) or more years of legal experience in higher education and/or government law.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Superior written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of Nevada Public Records and Open Meeting Law, higher‑education statutes, employment law, and fundraising/philanthropic activities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Comprehensive litigation and civil/administrative procedure knowledge.
  • Legal research proficiency using various tools.
  • Contract negotiation, drafting, and interpretation.
  • Regulatory compliance (TitleIX, FERPA, ADA, Clery Act, etc.).
  • Risk assessment and mitigation in educational contexts.
  • Employment law awareness and experience with faculty and employee rights.
Salary

Starting Salary: $141,254 (position contingent upon available funding). Exempt. Full‑time equivalent 100%.
