Job summary

Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) seeks an Assistant General Counsel to represent the agency, its Board, and personnel in diverse legal proceedings. The role covers employment, constitutional law, civil rights, EMTALA, mental health law, investigations, legislation, policies, ethics, and litigation in state and federal courts, as well as other tribunals.

The successful candidate will be licensed to practice in Oklahoma with an active Oklahoma Bar

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Oklahoma.
  • Active membership of the Oklahoma Bar Association.
  • Two years of legal or adjudicative experience (Level II).
  • Five years of legal or adjudicative experience (Level III).
  • Seven years of legal experience including two years of litigation or agency-defined practice (Level IV).

Responsibilities

  • Represent the agency, its Board, and agency personnel in legal proceedings.
  • Address employment, constitutional law, civil rights, EMTALA, mental health law, and related issues.
  • Oversee department investigations, legislation, policies, ethics, and litigation in state and federal courts and tribunals.

Job description

Assistant General Counsel

The incumbent will represent the agency, its Board, and agency personnel in legal proceedings and will be responsible for a wide array of legal issues to include employment law, constitutional law and civil rights, EMTALA, mental health law, department investigations, legislation, policies, ethics, and litigation in all state and federal courts along with other tribunals.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
Level II
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • A license to practice law in State of Oklahoma
  • An active membership of the Oklahoma Bar Association
  • Two years of legal experience or adjudicative experience
Level III
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • A license to practice law in State of Oklahoma
  • An active membership of the Oklahoma Bar Association
  • Five years of legal experience or adjudicative experience.
Level IV
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • A license to practice law in State of Oklahoma
  • An active membership with the Oklahoma Bar Association
  • Seven years of legal experience including two years of litigation, or agency-defined experience in the practice of law e.g. tax, or supervisory experience
