Job summary

The Assistant Editor works onsite at BGEA's Charlotte, NC headquarters and ensures print and digital communications reflect the ministry's editorial voice with the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, consistency, and quality. Qualifications

  • Four-year degree from college or technical school and five years of related experience and/or training—or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to translate concepts into narrative text and solve problems
  • Knowledgeable and proficient with Microsoft Office (including Word, Outlook, and Excel) and able to quickly learn new workflow and approvals software
  • Communication skills and ability to communicate complex ideas while remaining sensitive to readers’ needs

Responsibilities

  • Provides substantive editing and copyediting for print and digital communications
  • Shapes and refines content to improve clarity, organization, tone, flow, and consistency while preserving the author's intent and ensuring alignment with BGEA's editorial voice and standards
  • Supervises, trains, and leads the department’s proofreading team
  • Interfaces with executive staff on approvals, as needed
  • In conjunction with the Senior Content Manager and Senior Online Content Manager, identifies a project’s message or objective and translates it into effective communication
  • Contracts with freelance proofreaders as needed
  • Executes revisions as directed

Department Detail

The Communications Department at BGEA consists of the following areas: project management, ecommerce, email marketing, advertising, public relations/social media/promotion, creative services (graphic design, content writing/proofing and production), and Decision magazine, our official monthly publication. The department tells the story of what God is doing through the BGEA by creating print and online content that support the organization’s mission of proclaiming the Gospel, negotiating paid and leveraging unpaid promotional placements, and engaging new and existing supporters with targeted content using a combination of indirect and direct communications channels.

Job Summary

The Assistant Editor works onsite at BGEA headquarters in Charlotte, NC and is responsible for ensuring BGEA's print and digital communications reflect the ministry's editorial voice and meet the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, consistency, and quality. This role provides substantive editing and copyediting that refines structure, flow, tone, and readability while preserving the author's intent. Working closely with Creative Services, Content leadership, and ministry partners, the Assistant Editor helps produce compelling communications that faithfully represent the ministry and effectively support the proclamation of the Gospel.

Ministry Requirements
  • Maintains a personal, active relationship with Jesus Christ and is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ
  • Faithfully upholds BGEA in prayer
  • Participates in daily BGEA staff devotions including Bible reading, and leading group prayer as schedule permits
  • Demonstrates behavior aligned with BGEA’s Mission Statement, Statement of Faith, Hallmarks, policies, and expectations
  • Effectively represents Jesus Christ to those within both personal and professional spheres of influence
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provides substantive editing and copyediting for print and digital communications
  • Shapes and refines content to improve clarity, organization, tone, flow, and consistency while preserving the author's intent and ensuring alignment with BGEA's editorial voice and standards
  • Supervises, trains, and leads the department’s proofreading team

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves as Director of Content in conjunction with the Senior Content Manager and/or the Senior Online Content Manager in the Director of Content’s absence
  • Checks approval proofs from printer
  • Does press approvals, assuring quality standards are met
  • Other duties as assigned
