The Role
Alpha School is looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented Assistant Editor to help keep our growing post-production pipeline running smoothly.
You’ll prepare footage and projects for editors, manage media from ingest through archive, create versions and captions, and make sure every asset is organized, accessible, and ready for the next person. You’ll also help onboard editors into our technical workflow, support our shared storage environment, and occasionally assist with media management on local shoots.
This role will begin remotely but is based in Austin. Once our Austin production workspace is operational, you’ll transition to working regularly from the office and help maintain its day-to-day post-production setup.
What You’ll Do
- Ingest, organize, and manage footage across shared storage and review platforms
- Build and organize Premiere Pro projects for editor handoff
- Create proxies, sync media, generate transcripts, and prepare selects
- Build basic string-outs and assemblies from interviews and footage
- Source B-roll, soundbites, music options, and other project assets
- Create alternate durations, aspect ratios, subtitles, and clean versions
- Export, label, upload, and organize final deliverables
- Review videos for caption accuracy, technical issues, and media-consent concerns
- Media-manage and archive completed projects
- Maintain ingest logs, transfer records, and consistent naming structures
- Serve as the primary point of contact for footage ingestion and media availability
- Help onboard editors by setting up project access, LucidLink, Premiere, and related tools
- Provide basic support for shared storage, uploads, relinking, and server-related issues
- Occasionally support Austin-area shoots through footage offload, verification, backup, and upload
- Learn and use AI-assisted tools that improve post-production speed, organization, accessibility, and quality
What We’re Looking For
- Professional assistant-editing, post-production, or video-editing experience
- Strong working knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro
- Experience with footage ingest, proxies, relinking, exports, and media management
- Exceptional attention to detail and confidence managing large volumes of media
- A clear, consistent approach to file naming and project organization
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and support several editors
- Strong troubleshooting and communication skills
- Willingness to follow established workflows while helping identify improvements
- Curiosity about AI-assisted post-production and enthusiasm for learning new tools
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment and transition to regular in-office work in Austin
- Availability to occasionally support local shoots, including potential evening or weekend work
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with LucidLink, Frame.io, shared-storage environments, or similar platforms
- Experience preparing interview-driven, documentary, branded, or social content
- Familiarity with subtitles, SRT files, accessibility checks, and multi-platform versioning
- Experience handling camera media or performing on-set DIT/media-management duties
- Basic editing instincts and an interest in growing into more editorial work
About You
You are the kind of person who notices when a file is mislabeled, an asset is missing, or a project could be organized more clearly. You enjoy creating order, solving technical problems, and making it easier for editors to focus on the creative work. You are dependable, adaptable, comfortable asking questions, and excited to learn new systems—including emerging AI tools.
