Job summary

Middlebury College in Vermont is seeking an Assistant Director of the Writing Center to support a professional tutor team and work with the Director to provide training and oversight of peer tutors. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $28.98 - $34.09 per hour.

The role includes designing trainings, conducting campus outreach, and coordinating with the CTLR to staff the writing center and track outcomes.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in an academic field related to writing, rhetoric, education or composition studies.
• 2-3 years' experience teaching writing at the college level.
• Demonstrated ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds at a highly selective liberal arts institution.
• Experience with designing and leading training sessions for student employees.
• Demonstrated administration experience in the context of academic learning centers.
• Knowledge of current writing pedagogy.
• Ability to handle confidential material in a professional and sensitive manner.
• Ability to work with online course management systems and scheduling software.

Responsibilities

• Serves as the primary professional writing tutor for Middlebury students, assisting undergraduate students at all stages of the writing process across multiple subject areas and genres.
• In coordination with Writing Center director, designs and leads trainings and workshops for peer writing tutors.
• Plans and conducts campus outreach, information sessions and workshops for students and faculty, and manages drop-in hours for the Writing Center.
• With Writing Center director, establishes and maintains metrics for assessing outcomes and trends. Leverages data analytics to track and evaluate student progress, engagement, and impact.
• Supports Writing Center director in managing administration of the Writing Center, including events such as the Paul Ward Prize ceremony and assigning workloads among peer writing tutors and Writing Center staff.
• Coordinates with other CTLR units to maintain and staff the CTLR space in the Davis Library.
• Participates in CTLR-wide meetings on peer tutor programs and tutor training, sharing data and lessons across units dedicated to academic coaching.
