Position Summary

A full‑time, twelve‑month position. The Assistant Director primarily manages the academic‑year tutorial program, composes curriculum for composition/literature or math/science, and plans and implements two satellite summer residential programs and related testing & assessment. The role also supports a large cross‑age academic‑year tutorial program, instructional Saturday components, student advising, recruitment, and cultural enrichment activities. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of the Upward Bound Program.

Responsibilities

• Supervise tutoring program, including tutor training, attendance tracking, hiring, dismissal, payroll processing, field supervision of tutors and Part‑Time Tutorial Coordinators, and study hall logistics.
• Coordinate all program and student academic assessment activities, collecting quarter and semester grades and transcripts, administering program testing instruments, and organizing office systems for academic data and assessment.
• Recruit new program participants at two Upward Bound high schools each year through presentations, assessment interviews, selection recommendations, and home‑visit support.
• Design and lead specific academic training for summer program staff on curriculum planning, lesson design, alternative assessment, classroom methodologies, and pedagogies.
• Set up internship component and logistics for two summer residential programs.
• Coordinate alumni tracking and outreach efforts.
• Serve as residential summer coordinator or instructor during the five‑week summer residential component.
• Collect data for the annual performance report to the U.S. Department of Education.
• Develop core subject instruction (English & composition or social sciences) for summer programs.
• Provide academic advising for a cohort of Upward Bound participants, including parent follow‑up and designing college planning curriculum for the assigned cohort.
• Lead outdoor education, community service, and fine arts enrichment activities.
• Support parent & community outreach programs and college exploration activities and trips.
• Supervise two tutorial sessions at target high schools each week.
• Make weekly visits to target schools to follow up with students and teachers.
• Drive students and tutors to various program activities and functions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; Master’s degree preferred.
• Demonstrated record of successful experience working in educational programs and/or community services targeting students similar to Upward Bound (low income, potential first‑generation college‑bound).
• Prior experience in a residential summer or year‑round program for low‑income and/or first‑generation college‑bound students (e.g., Upward Bound, Summer Bridge, or MESA Program) preferred.
• One year of high‑school or college‑level teaching experience in related subjects preferred.

Licenses & Certificates

• Valid driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurance carrier.

Remote Work Eligibility

CategoryB: All staff positions require an initial 30‑calendar‑day on‑campus work period. Eligible for up to one remote work day per week during the academic year and one remote work day during the non‑academic year, subject to supervisor approval.

Physical Requirements

Regularly required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers, talk or hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, lift up to 10pounds, and move up to 25pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
