Job summary

Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s University Housing seeks an Assistant Director of Residence Life to lead residential education and operations. This 12-month, full-time role will supervise Hall Directors and staff, coordinate staff development, and collaborate with campus partners to promote student belonging and success.

You will participate in on-call rotations, manage staffing and budgets, and contribute to departmental initiatives while advancing student development and safe campus

Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Student Affairs, or related field.
• Three years or more as a full-time Hall Director, Community Coordinator, or Residence Life professional staff member.
• Experience with Living Learning Communities, RHA, NRHH, or similar student leadership organizations.
• Experience with student conduct administration.
• Experience leading staff recruitment and training.
• Knowledge of student development theory.
• Knowledge of occupancy management and residential operations.
• Experience with StarRez or similar housing software.
• Excellent communication and project management skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership for residential education and residence life operations.
• Supervise, mentor, coach, and evaluate Hall Directors, Graduate Assistants, and staff.
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings to support performance, wellbeing, and growth.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding, training, and evaluation of staff at multiple levels.
• Develop and facilitate staff development opportunities throughout the year.
• Support student leadership programs and campus partnerships for engagement.
• Respond to student emergencies and participate in on-call rotation.
• Mentor Hall Directors on student conduct, crisis response, documentation, and support.
• Collaborate on departmental committees and strategic initiatives.
• Coordinate occupancy management, assignments, conferences, hiring, budgets, orientation, and safety operations.
• Represent University Housing at New Student Orientation and other initiatives.
• Develop and revise departmental policies, procedures, and training materials.
• Manage multiple projects while maintaining customer service.
• Opportunities for portfolio assignments and leadership aligned with goals.
