Job Summary and Purpose

The Assistant Director of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) serves as a strategic partner to the Director of Special Education in supporting the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of specially designed instruction, inclusive practices, and related services for students with disabilities. This position partners with school and division leaders to strengthen instructional systems, build educator capacity, and improve student outcomes through evidence-based practices, professional learning, and data-informed decision making.

Work Objectives / Essential Functions
  • Partner with school administrators, instructional staff, and division leaders to strengthen the implementation of SDI, High-Leverage Practices (HLPs), co-teaching, inclusive practices, and related services that improve outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • Analyze school- and division-level student achievement, progress monitoring, and instructional implementation data to identify trends, prioritize supports, and develop targeted professional learning and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Design, coordinate, and evaluate professional learning aligned with division priorities, school MYSPs, and identified instructional needs.
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate assigned staff while fostering collaboration, professional growth, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide guidance and support to schools in the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional improvement plans designed to strengthen SDI and increase educator capacity.
  • Collaborate with school and division leaders to develop, implement, and monitor initiatives that improve instructional programming, related services, and equitable access to high-quality instruction for students with disabilities.
  • Provide consultation and recommendations to school and division leadership regarding SDI, instructional programming, related services, and evidence-based practices to support continuous improvement across the division.
Education and Experience
  • Education Attainment (Required): Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field
  • Education Attainment (Preferred): Master’s degree in Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership or related field
  • Relevant Experience (Required): Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience as a special education teacher
  • Relevant Experience (Preferred): Experience as a school-based administrator, instructional leader, department chair, lead teacher, or division-level instructional specialist preferred; experience designing and facilitating professional learning for educators; experience analyzing instructional and student outcome data to develop and evaluate improvement initiatives; demonstrated success leading instructional improvement efforts, supervising staff, and collaborating with school and division leaders.
  • Industry Licensure or Certifications (Required): Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License
  • Industry Licensure or Certifications (Preferred): Endorsement in Administration and Supervision
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of IDEA, Virginia Regulations Governing Special Education Programs, and evidence-based instructional practices for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of SDI, High-Leverage Practices (HLPs), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), co-teaching, MTSS, and inclusive instructional practices.
  • Ability to analyze instructional implementation and student outcome data to inform strategic planning and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach, and evaluate professional staff while fostering collaborative relationships.
  • Ability to design, facilitate, and evaluate high-quality professional learning for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to establish productive partnerships with school administrators, division leaders, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equitable educational opportunities and improved outcomes for students with disabilities.
