Job summary

Alaska Pacific University is seeking an Assistant Director of Recreational Programs to supervise aquatics, ensure water quality, and lead fitness initiatives across campus. The role supports the Director and coordinates daily operations of the pool, classes, and safety programs.

You will manage staff, run certifications, schedule courses, and partner with campus departments to promote health, wellness, and community engagement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, outdoor studies, or related field; substitution possible on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two (2) years' experience coordinating and/or administering recreation programs.
  • CPR and First-Aid certification; ARC Lifeguard certification or ability to obtain; Certified Pool Operator license or ability to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee water quality and daily maintenance of the pool.
  • Supervise Student Water Quality Technician(s) and aquatic staff.
  • Program, schedule, advertise and conduct pool and fitness classes.
  • Provide safety and aquatics training for swim instructors and lifeguards and members of the APU community.
  • Lifeguarding as needed.
  • Program and facilitate campus health and wellness events.
  • Oversee organization of registration, classes, communications with participants and provides instructors with necessary paperwork and information for maintaining their certifications.
  • Files all necessary paperwork with human resources and payroll, and monitors employee timesheets.

Assistant Director of Recreational Programs

Alaska Pacific University

The Assistant Director acts as primary supervisor of aquatics including maintenance of water quality, fitness programs and staff, provides health and wellness opportunities for the university, and assists Director as needed.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
  • Oversees the water quality and daily maintenance of the pool.
  • Supervises Student Water Quality Technician(s) and aquatic staff.
  • Programs, schedules, advertises and conducts (where applicable) pool and fitness classes
  • Provides safety and aquatics training opportunities for swim instructors and lifeguards as well as members of the APU community.
  • Lifeguarding as needed.
  • Programming and facilitating campus health and wellness events.
  • Oversees organization of registration, classes, communications with participants and provides instructors with necessary paperwork and information for maintaining their certifications, instructing their classes and monitoring progress of their students.
  • Files all necessary paperwork with human resources and/or payroll, as well as monitoring and approving employee timesheets.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Outdoor Studies, or related field. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Non-Supervisory: Two (2) years' experience coordinating and/or administering recreation programs.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
  • CPR and First-Aid certification
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (or ability to obtain within a specified period of time from hire date)
  • Certified Pool Operators License(or ability to obtain within a specified period of time from hire date)
PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
  • American Red Cross Instructor, Wilderness First Responder (WMA or WMI), EMT, Water Safety Instructor, Water Safety Instructor Trainer, USA Swimming, Total Immersion preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Current and valid driver's license required. Ability to pass a driving history check and driving test.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Position is working in pool/aquatic environment, reception/office area, and other areas throughout the university where you may be subject to exposure and/or change in weather. Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours. Must be able to lift, push, pull and move a minimum of 25 pounds. Must be able to perform data entry for extended periods of time.
