The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) supports the Director of Nursing by helping direct licensed and non-licensed staff to ensure high-quality resident care, and serves as the acting DON in their absence. This role oversees occupational health and staff development functions, including infection control, employee injury management, worker health programs, and resident and employee safety. The ADON conducts surveillance, maintains records, evaluates incident reports, and provides data and recommendations to the Safety, Infection Control, and Quality Assessment/Assurance Committees. Additionally, the ADON coordinates orientation, hands‑on training, competency evaluations, preceptorships, and in‑house education, promoting staff knowledge and skill development. Responsibilities also include supporting safety programs, participating in policy development, assisting with resident and family engagement, and providing nursing care when needed. The ADON upholds confidentiality standards, fosters a positive and inclusive workplace, ensures compliance with MDH regulations and the Residents’ Bill of Rights, and actively participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
