Job summary

Westfield Area YMCA is seeking an Assistant Director of Competitive Aquatics to assist in managing the competitive aquatics program. You will help certify staff, oversee budgets, personnel and risk management while aligning with YMCA core values.

The role includes leading swim clinics, managing the Devilfish program, overseeing team tryouts, registrations and payments, and ensuring safety and quality across all meets and practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university.
• Minimum of three (3) years’ coaching experience with leadership responsibilities (head age group coach, head coach, etc.)
• Must be a member of USA Swimming (NJ) and possess, maintain and renew the American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches training.
• As a condition of employment, the Assistant Director of Competitive Aquatics must possess, maintain and renew YMCA Lifeguard and/or American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers and Professional Rescuers (CPR & AED), Basic First Aid or equivalent and obtain and maintain Emergency Oxygen Administration within 30 days of hire
• Must have the knowledge required for the management of a competitive swim team program of 250+ swimmers of various ages.
• Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.

• Adhere to safety rules and standards and manage equipment and facility issues.

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Competitive Aquatics, the Assistant Director of Competitive Aquatics is responsible for assisting in the management, supervision and evaluation of the competitive aquatics program. The individual in this role is responsible for the certification and training necessary to be a certified swim coach in accordance with the YMCA of the USA and USA Swimming. The position is responsible for program, budget, personnel, maintenance, equipment, trainings/staff meetings, risk management, quality assurance and other functions as listed under Essential Functions. The Assistant Director of Competitive Aquatics must also demonstrate a commitment to the YMCA’s four Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. The Assistant Director of Competitive Aquatics must exemplify that member service is as an equal a part of any position in the “YMCA” as the technical aspects of each position.

• Assist with the supervision, development and oversight of the Devilfish Program with direction from the Associate Director of Competitive Aquatics.
• Responsible for recommending, developing, creating and implementing new programs based on space availability with approval from Competitive Aquatics Director.
• Take a leadership role with swim clinics, long course training and provide individual/small group lessons as needed. Oversee the individual lesson program and monitor payments.
• Assist with registrations for any swim team related programs, collecting the necessary paperwork, and follow up with members on any outstanding payments.
• Assist with staff supervision and development of lesson plans for coaching staff to follows as directed by the Associate Director of Competitive Aquatics and/or Director of Competitive Aquatics.
• Assist with overseeing Devilfish swim team tryouts including but not limited to scheduling of clinic dates, inquiries, responses post tryouts, etc. Promote and recruit new swimmers for the Westfield Area YMCA swim team.
• Annual monitoring and revision of practice & meet schedules with Associate Director of Competitive Aquatics and/or Director of Competitive Aquatics.
• Ensure that coaches are tracking attendance for all practice groups.
• Maintain order and discipline during practice sessions in the locker room and at swim meets.
• Develop and implement effective ways to create team spirit among all our athletes.
• Be on deck for all assigned hours.
• Be available to attend all dual meets, YMCA championship meets and USA Invitational meets that are assigned to you by the Director of Competitive Aquatics.
• Adhere to all aquatic safety rules and standards set by the YMCA Aquatic and Competitive Aquatic Directors.
• Prepare lineups to be reviewed for YMCA Dual Meets. Develop a strong knowledge of the meet manager software and team unify website. Participate in team unify webinars, online trainings, calls.
• Report any equipment breakdowns or safety hazards in pools to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Report any scoreboard or timing system issues to supervisor.
• Evaluate existing equipment and make recommendations for new equipment when replacing or supplementing equipment.
• Ensure full understanding of the team’s timing system and keep an electronic logbook of all service requests/maintenance issues.
• Be available to work mornings, evenings and weekends for practice sessions or swim meets as scheduled.
• Assist in a leadership capacity with team’s social events—i.e. Holiday Party and Swim Team Banquet.
• Assist in the administration function of the team, i.e. team unify related work, emails, phone calls, results, etc.
• Update the Devilfish team handbook.
• Respond timely to parent questions and concerns (via email or over the phone) within 24-48 business hours.
• Change/update the Westfield Area YMCA record board annually with Director.
• Assist with securement of offsite training sites (Cranford, Mountainside, Memorial Pool, etc.)
