Job summary

YMCA San Antonio is seeking an assistant swim team coach to oversee activities, practices, and competitions under the direction of the Aquatics Director. You will provide leadership, instruction, and motivation in a competitive swimming environment, promoting safety and member engagement.

This role emphasizes creating a positive atmosphere, developing swimmers across levels, and ensuring adherence to YMCA and USA Swimming standards, with opportunities to work with a dedicated aquatics team.

Qualifications

  • Three to five years of swim coaching experience.
  • YMCA CPR/First Aid/AED and Emergency Oxygen certifications within 30 days of hire.
  • US Swimming certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee swimmers at home meets and at least one away meet every two months, ensuring safety and compliance with YMCA/USA Swimming standards.
  • Coach a minimum of three swim team practices per week, including evenings or early mornings.
  • Communicate with swimmers, parents/guardians, and YMCA staff about practices, competitions, and expectations.
  • Design and execute training plans for swimmers of all levels, from beginners to national/sectional competitors.
  • Track progress and adjust training programs to improve performance and skill development.
  • Ensure adherence to YMCA policies and provide regular updates to Aquatics leadership.

The assistant swim team coach oversees the activities, practices, and competitions of the swim team along with the direction from the Aquatics Director or Aquatics Coordinator. Provides leadership, instruction and motivation of participants in a competitive swimming environment. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement, youth development and healthy living in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS:
  • Coachandsupervise swimmers atall assignedhome swimmeetsand a minimumof one (1)away USA Swimming meet everytwo months,providing instruction,performance evaluation, athletesupport, and ensuring participant safety and compliancewith YMCA and USA Swimming standards.
  • Coach a minimum ofthree (3) swim team practices per week, including evening and/or early morning practices as scheduled.
  • Communicateeffectively with swimmers, parents/guardians, and YMCA staffregardingpractices, competitions, athleteprogress, andprogramexpectations.
  • Design and executetraining plans thatcatertotheneedsof swimmersof all levels, frombeginnersto YMCA Nationals/STX Sectionals athletes.
  • Track andassessthe progress ofswimmers,providing feedback andadjustmentstotrainingprograms as needed.
  • Tracks andmaintainsthequality of theswimteamprogramandprovidestheopportunity to improve their swimmingskillsandtoachievesuccessat each level of ability.
  • Communicate regularly with theAquatics Director or Aquatics Coordinatorregardingprogram operations, swimmerperformance, safetyconcerns, incidents, andall requiredreportstosupport effectiveprogrammanagement and compliance.
  • Participatein required staff meetings and training tomaintaincurrent knowledgeof YMCA policies, procedures,safetyprotocols,and coaching standardsnecessaryto perform the essentialfunctionsoftheposition.
  • Ensure the YMCA swimteamadheres to all YMCA approved local,state,and national swimteam guidelines and policies.
  • Participates in our Annual YMCA fundraising campaigns. Along with the Aquatics Director or Aquatics Coordinator,assistsin hostingat least oneannual swimteamfundraisingevent.

  • Abilitytorelateeffectively todiversegroupsof peoplefromall social andeconomicsegmentsof the community.
  • Strongproblem-solvingskillsrequiredininteractionswithparents,coaches,volunteersandstaff.
  • Certifications required within the first30 daysofhire:YMCAapproved basiclifesavingskills such as CPR,First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen.
  • USASwimmingcertificationorrequiredtocompletewithinfirst30daysofhire.
