Assistant Director of Communications
Non-Unit Professional position, 37.5 hours/week
Campus Location: Danvers
SALARY: Anticipated salary range $70,000.00 - $80,000.00. Actual salary is commensurate with experience and education. General Statement Of Duties
The Assistant Director of Communications leads the development and execution of integrated communication strategies that support the institution's mission, vision, and goals. This leadership role emphasizes storytelling, branding, executive communications, and reputation management to strengthen institutional visibility. The Assistant Director collaborates with senior leadership and internal teams to ensure consistent, strategic messaging and oversees the Communications Specialist.
Essential Functions
Strategic Communications
- Supervise the Communications Specialist and provide mentorship and direction.
- Design and implement comprehensive communication plans supporting key initiatives, programs, and institutional priorities.
- Collaborate with campus and community partners to identify and highlight key achievements, research findings, and events.
- Provide messaging support to leadership, including talking points, presentations, and written materials for internal and external audiences.
- Serve as a strategic partner to academic and administrative units on communication approaches for initiatives and announcements.
Brand and Message Development
- Ensure brand consistency across all communications, marketing materials, and digital content.
- Lead storytelling efforts that highlight the institution's impact, values, and community.
Media Relations
- Establish and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets.
- Prepare press releases, media advisories, and pitch stories to relevant media contacts.
- Monitor press related to those associated with NSCC and the college as a whole.
- Coordinate media coverage for campus events and facilitate interviews with institutional representatives.
- Assist in preparing leadership for public engagements and media opportunities.
Cross-Team Collaboration
- Work with marketing to ensure aligned and effective communications.
- Oversee timelines, budgets, and vendors for communication-related projects.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Senior Executive Director of Strategic Communications
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field.
- 5-7 years of professional experience in strategic communications, public affairs, or brand management.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Demonstrated experience managing projects with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
- Familiarity with brand strategy, digital platforms, and content planning.
- Comfortable advising leadership and navigating complex institutional environments.
- Experience in higher education, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations preferred.
- Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English) is a plus.
- Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or National background check as a condition of employment.
