Job Description Summary

Overview
The Assistant Director is a member of the Center for Student Engagement, Activities, and Leadership team. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director for the Wilks Institute of Leadership and Service and works with colleagues and stakeholders on campus and in the community to enhance community engagement, civic engagement, and leadership development at Miami University. The position provides opportunities to supervise undergraduate student employees. Additional opportunities include professional development through participation in conferences and workshops, including certification as a CliftonStrengths Coach.

The Assistant Director works collaboratively with students, campus partners, community leaders, and departments to provide students with the opportunity to engage with communities of interest and develop a sense of belonging. The Assistant Director represents the Center through multiple campus committees that support the leadership, service, and civic engagement mission of the Institute. The Assistant Director works with the entire Center and other colleagues to develop and implement opportunities for students to understand and grow their leadership skills and how they can use them to positively impact the community. The Center is a vibrant and collaborative team committed to continued growth and development for Miami University students and our team members.

Job Description Responsibilities:
  • Exercise collaborative leadership within the Center to facilitate the coordination of the Ambassador program (peer leaders/facilitators) and other signature services, leadership, and community engagement programs.
  • Work collaboratively with other areas of the Center to develop and implement leadership workshops and retreats designed to increase the leadership capacity of students, student organization leaders, and student organization advisors.
  • Deliver workshops and programs designed to increase participation in Miami’sGallup CliftonStrengths efforts.
  • Teach one section of EDL 290, Nature of Group Leadership, or similar course on a rotating basis.
  • Assist with U-Lead pre-semester leadership development program for first yearstudents.
  • Assist with the management of ComMUnity Connect platform designed toconnect students and student groups with community service and volunteeropportunities.
  • Assist with voter registration, voter education, and other civic engagement/leadership programming and services.
  • Supervise up to 10 undergraduate student employees (Ambassadors).
  • Plan and execute small and large-sale engagement activities designed tofacilitate student community development and sense of belonging
  • Deliver workshops and programs designed to increase student awareness of andparticipation in community service and volunteerism.
  • Assist with Center wide and Institute Social Media and website initiatives andupdates.
  • Actively participate in Student Life and University Committees.
  • Represent theCenter on several campus committees that are aligned with the service andcommunity engagement missions of the Institute.
  • Manage event/program processes for large scale events and work collaborativelywith campus partners and off-campus partners and vendors to ensure thesuccess of events.
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends to facilitate programs andactivities designed to engage and serve students.
  • Ability to foster and cultivate a community of belonging for all students.

  • Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications.
  • One year of experience in higher education, student affairs, or a related field
  • Master’s Degree in Leadership/Management, College Student Personnel, Social Work, Education or related fields are preferred.
  • Knowledge of or certifications in personal assessment instruments (Clifton Strengths, MBTI, Emotional Intelligence, International Coaching Federation, etc.).
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Knowledge and effective application of leadership, service and/or community engagement theories.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervision of student staff members.
  • Familiarity with assessment practices.
Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Familiarity with social media accounts and website/CMS management.
  • Graduate or professional experience with student organization advising,program/event planning, leadership development programming, alcoholeducation and/or hazing prevention
