Job description

Overview

If you believe a successful event is more than a BEO, a ballroom, and a hope, we should talk.

Town and Country Resort is looking for an Assistant Director of Catering & Convention Services who knows how to turn big ideas into flawlessly executed events-and can keep a cool head when the timeline changes, the guest count grows, and someone suddenly needs 400 more chairs.

With 671 guest rooms, extensive meeting and event space, multiple restaurants and bars, and a convention calendar that keeps things interesting, we need a hospitality professional who can lead with confidence, collaborate across departments, and make our clients feel like their event is the only event happening on property. #towncountrySD

Responsibilities
What You’ll Do

As the Assistant Director of Catering & Convention Services, you will be a key leader within our Events team, supporting the Director of Catering & Convention Services while overseeing the planning and execution of meetings, conventions, social events, weddings, and all the wonderfully complicated details that come with them.

  • Lead and support the Catering & Convention Services team in the planning and execution of events from turnover to farewell.
  • Partner with clients to understand their vision, anticipate their needs, and occasionally explain why their 6:00 p.m. ballroom setup cannot also be a 6:00 p.m. cocktail reception.
  • Review BEOs, resumes, diagrams, timelines, guarantees, and event details to ensure everyone is working from the same playbook.
  • Work closely with Banquets, Culinary, Housekeeping, Engineering, Front Office, Sales, Finance, and other operational departments to ensure seamless event execution.
  • Conduct pre-convention meetings, event briefings, and operational meetings to make sure the right people have the right information at the right time.
  • Monitor event execution and proactively resolve issues before they become client complaints.
  • Build strong relationships with meeting planners, corporate clients, wedding professionals, vendors, and other event partners.
  • Support the team with upselling opportunities and revenue-generating strategies while keeping the guest experience at the center of the conversation.
  • Review event profitability and identify opportunities to improve revenue, efficiency, and client satisfaction.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop Catering & Convention Services team members.
  • Help establish service standards and hold the team accountable for delivering them.
  • Step in when the unexpected happens—which, in events, is approximately every 11 minutes.
  • Maintain accurate records, communicate changes clearly, and ensure all event details are documented and distributed appropriately.
  • Assist with forecasting, staffing, scheduling, and departmental planning.
  • Handle client concerns professionally and confidently, with a solutions-first mindset.
  • Support the Director of Catering & Convention Services with departmental strategy, projects, and day-to-day leadership.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and cross-functional initiatives throughout the resort.
  • Champion the Town and Country Resort guest and team member experience in everything you do.
Qualifications

We are looking for someone who can lead without hovering, sell without being pushy, and solve problems without announcing that there is a problem.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • Previous leadership experience in hotel catering, convention services, event operations, or a similar hospitality environment.
  • Strong knowledge of catering and convention operations, including BEOs, event timelines, room setups, food and beverage, audiovisual coordination, and banquet operations.
  • Experience managing multiple events and priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to confidently interact with executive-level clients, meeting planners, vendors, and hotel leadership.
  • Strong financial acumen and an understanding of event profitability and revenue management.
  • A genuine passion for hospitality and creating memorable experiences.
  • The ability to make decisions quickly, calmly, and professionally.
  • A leadership style that is collaborative, accountable, and appropriately hands-on.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with hotel/event management systems.
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as business demands.
You Might Be Our Person If…
  • You can walk into a ballroom and immediately notice that something is wrong, even if you cannot quite explain what yet.
  • "That's not my department" is not part of your vocabulary.
  • You can read a BEO and actually enjoy it.
  • You know that a successful event is about the details and the relationships.
  • You can have five conversations happening at once and somehow remember all five.
  • You understand that the client may not remember the perfectly executed timeline—but they will absolutely remember how you made them feel.
  • You believe "we've always done it that way" is an invitation to find a better way.
  • You can handle pressure without becoming the pressure.
  • You know that hospitality is not just what happens when everything goes according to plan. It's what happens when it doesn't.
Why Town and Country?

Because this isn't your average hotel.

Town and Country Resort is a destination resort built for big meetings, big celebrations, big ideas, and occasionally very big coffee orders. Our team creates experiences for groups and guests from around the world while working in one of San Diego's most iconic resort environments.

You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside talented hospitality professionals, collaborate across multiple operational departments, and help execute events where the details matter—and where there is always another opportunity to raise the bar.

The Fine Print

This position requires the ability to move throughout the resort and event spaces for extended periods, including standing and walking, navigating stairs and uneven surfaces, bending, reaching, pushing and pulling equipment, and occasionally lifting or carrying items weighing up to 25 pounds. The role may require working outdoors and in varying weather conditions, as well as evenings, weekends, and holidays based on event schedules.

If you’re ready to help us make the complicated look easy, we want to meet you.

Come join the team at Town and Country Resort—and help us make some really big things happen.
