Job summary

Xavier University in Cincinnati is seeking an Assistant Director, Career Development to lead career coaching, program development, and experiential-learning initiatives for a defined student cohort. The role collaborates with Deans, faculty, and campus partners to align services with academic, personal, and professional preparation needs.

The position is 12 months, full-time, working 37.5 hours per week, with potential for occasional night or weekend commitments.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Human Resources, or similar field.
  • Previous professional experience in career development or related field.
  • Knowledge of career development, student development theories, research practices, and recruiting trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations of students, e.g., students of color, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities, students on academic probation, career changers, and exploratory (undecided) majors.

Responsibilities

  • Provide career coaching including career assessments, major and career exploration, job/internship opportunities, graduate school planning, and professional skill development through scheduled and drop-in appointments with individuals and groups.
  • Facilitate both general and major-specific career programming aligning with academic departmental needs, which may include in-class presentations, campus-wide workshops and/or student club presentations on career planning, graduate school preparation and job/internship-search topics.
  • Leverage a strong knowledge of student development and the college student experience to assist the Career Development team in implementing creative new strategies to better connect students with employer postings, events, mentors, and on-campus recruiting activities.
  • Assist students from diverse populations (e.g. students of color, first generation, LGBTQIA+, international students, etc.) in connecting with experiential learning opportunities and career development resources.
  • Assist in coordination of on-campus and virtual interviews.
  • Foster relationships with department chairs and faculty in designated liaison majors. Share information with other members of the Career Development team.
  • Assist in the data collection of post-graduate career outcomes.

Assistant Director, Career Development


The Xavier University Career Development Office has adopted an enhanced mission to support the holistic, personal and professional development needs of all students. Xavier University is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Director, Career Development in the Division of Student Affair under the department of Academic Engagement. The position reports to the Senior Assistant Director, Career Development, and will work collaboratively with Deans, academic departments, faculty, and other groups to coordinate and provide essential career readiness services which support the career, academic, personal, career, and professional preparation needs of students.


The work of the Assistant Director is to develop and support the delivery of career readiness competencies, integration of vocational discernment concepts with career development tools and techniques, professional development and experiential learning opportunities. This position also serves as a career coach for a designated caseload of students mainly within a specific college. In addition, the Assistant Director will partner with external and campus partners to increase participation in experiential learning opportunities throughout the university. Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively withdiverse populations of students, e.g., students of color, firstgeneration college students, and students with disabilities,students on academic probation, career changers, and exploratory(undecided) majors.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Certification in MBTI or Strong Interest Inventory (those whoare not yet certified will have the opportunity to become certifiedupon starting the position).

  • 1-3 years professional experience in career development(graduate assistantships can be counted towards years ofexperience).

  • Experience in a university career office working with diversestudent populations.

  • Experience utilizing student information and tracking systems,such as Handshake or Banner.


This is a 12 month, full-time position, and employee is expected towork 37.5 hours per week Monday through Friday with occasionalnight/weekend commitments.
