POSITION SUMMARY
Camp Bob Waldorf, a program of Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles (JBBBSLA), is seeking an Assistant Director to serve as a key member of the camp’s senior leadership team. The Assistant Director is the primary leadership partner to the Vice President of Camp & Retreat Operations and is responsible for supporting the overall management, culture, and execution of all camp and retreat programs. This role serves as second‑in‑command and must be prepared to step in and assume leadership of camp operations whenever the VP is unavailable or focused on other critical matters. The Assistant Director oversees major operational areas of camp including camper care and wellness, staff supervision and training, teen leadership development, program implementation, compliance, and family communication. This leader plays a central role in ensuring a safe, mission‑driven, joyful, and well‑run camp environment grounded in Jewish values.
This is a year‑round, in‑person position based in Glendale, CA, with required on‑site residency during summer camp and all retreat weekends.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities

Camp Operations & Leadership

  • Serve as a primary leadership and thought partner in strategic planning and day‑to‑day operations.
  • Step into full operational leadership when the VP of Camp & Retreat Operations is unavailable, ensuring seamless continuity of camp programs and supervision.
  • Oversee key areas of camp management including staff supervision, camper care systems, programming implementation, and operational logistics.
  • Support ACA accreditation, USDA certification, and Department of Public Health compliance efforts.
  • Model professionalism, accountability, and strong decision‑making under pressure.

Staff Leadership & Supervision

  • Directly supervise designated camp leadership staff and provide coaching, evaluation, and performance feedback.
  • Support recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of seasonal and year‑round staff.
  • Design and facilitate leadership development and staff training sessions.
  • Provide visible, active leadership presence during camp sessions and retreats.
  • Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and mission‑aligned staff culture.

Camper Care & Behavioral Support

  • Oversee and directly supervise the Camper Care Program, ensuring consistent and developmentally appropriate behavioral support.
  • Review camper applications, intake notes, and health documentation to assess readiness and identify support needs.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for families regarding camper behavior, emotional wellbeing, and care planning.
  • Lead response efforts for complex behavioral, social‑emotional, or mental health situations.
  • Complete all mandated reporting and required documentation in compliance with legal and organizational standards.

Programming & Training

  • Oversee and steward Teen Leadership programming, including Leaders in Training and Junior Counselor programs.
  • Participate in interviews and selection of teen leadership participants.
  • Support implementation of Jewish programming that strengthens camper identity, belonging, and community.
  • Ensure program quality, consistency, and alignment with camp values.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Compensation and Benefits

JBBBSLA offers a compensation package that includes a competitive salary range commensurate with experience ($71,000-$75,000). We enjoy a fun office environment, and a fantastic team of people dedicated to the meaningful work we do.

  • Early closure on Fridays outside of retreats and summer camp in observance of Shabbat, creating a 38‑hour work week

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years’ experience in Jewish camp leadership, education, or youth programming.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing complex operations.
  • Strong judgment and ability to make sound decisions in dynamic environments. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with ACA Accreditation and LA County Department of Public Health encouraged but not required.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work on your feet for 8+ hours during camp retreat and summer season.
