Job description

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR-GREEK LIFE The University of Alabama at Birmingham

General Responsibilities: Student Engagement provides a unified framework for advancing student success and belonging through opportunities for mentorship, leadership development, service, involvement, and community connection. Within this structure, the Office of Fraternity Sorority Life supports a vibrant fraternity and sorority community through student advising, leadership development, community programming, organizational support, and the development and implementation of policies and standards. The Assistant Director for Fraternity Sorority Life plays an important role in both the strategic and day-to-day operations of the fraternity and sorority community. In addition to advising fraternity and sorority governing councils, chapters, and student leaders, this position works closely with campus partners and external fraternity and sorority organizations to support the continued development and success of the community. The Office of Fraternity Sorority Life also plays a significant role in the operation of the Student Assembly Building, a central hub for student organization engagement and programming. The Fraternity Sorority Life team supports the day-to-day operations of the building, including the reservation and event registration processes for fraternities and sororities as well as the broader student organization community. The team also oversees the recruitment, selection, training, and ongoing development of the student employees who support Student Assembly Building operations. This position therefore offers an opportunity to work across both fraternity and sorority life and broader student engagement operations. The successful candidate will contribute to student leadership development and organizational success while also providing leadership to professional, graduate, and student staff and helping ensure that students have access to well-supported spaces, processes, and resources that facilitate meaningful involvement on campus.

  • Ability to establish productive relationships with students, alumni, advisors, national organizations, campus partners, and other stakeholders.

  • Ability to challenge and support student leaders while helping them develop their own leadership capacity.

  • Strong verbal and written communication, particularly the ability to communicate expectations, policies, and difficult decisions clearly and professionally.

  • Ability to assess complex situations, balance competing interests, and make thoughtful decisions within established policies.

  • Commitment to helping students develop skills, take ownership, and successfully navigate organizational responsibilities.
