Job summary

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York seeks an Assistant Curator of American Textiles with expertise in 18th‑ to mid‑20th‑century art. You will research, catalogue, and interpret textiles in the American Wing, proposing installations and publications to broaden historical narratives.

You will lead tours, develop training for volunteers, collaborate with conservators and curators, engage diverse audiences, and contribute to scholarly research and public programs.

Qualifications

• Master's degree with specialization in American textiles.
• PhD or ABD preferred.
• Strong understanding of textile structures, materials, and techniques.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to ongoing collection research, assessment, and refinement of American textiles.
• Identify opportunities to bring fresh ideas and narratives to installations and gallery rotations.
• Research and write interpretive materials, including gallery texts and publications.
• Assist with and propose gallery installations, some with accompanying publications.
• Recommend artwork for acquisition in collaboration with conservators, curators, and collection managers.
