Job Description

The NYC Law Department is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Unit Chief of the Special Litigation Unit. Under the supervision of the Unit Chief and the Deputy Unit Chief, duties may include:

  1. Training, supervising, and assigning sensitive personal injury cases to attorneys;
  2. Organizing and leading staff meetings;
  3. Developing and implementing litigation strategies;
  4. Assisting in trial strategy development, monitoring, and reporting;
  5. Reviewing and editing attorneys’ written work;
  6. Identifying and recommending matters for settlement, drafting settlement memoranda, and negotiating settlements;
  7. Drafting master papers and forms;
  8. Organizing workflow and coverage;
  9. Developing and delivering training modules;
  10. Interfacing with City and outside agencies to process legal requests and build relationships;
  11. Overseeing accurate data entry of litigation events;
  12. Meeting court deadlines and ensuring comprehensive caseload preparation;
  13. Reviewing deposition reports and conducting case reviews;
  14. Recommending and overseeing expert witness retention;
  15. Preparing intake summaries and maintaining the intake database;
  16. Managing special projects;
  17. Handling a small caseload through all litigation phases, including hearings, pleadings, motions, witness interviews, and trial work.

Post-orientation, attorneys may work remotely under two programs: limited irregular remote work or a Citywide pilot with two set remote days per week, subject to approval and coverage needs. In-person attendance is required for court appearances or other responsibilities on remote days.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be admitted to practice in New York (or be eligible for admission in SDNY and EDNY). Substantial tort-related legal experience, organizational and supervisory skills, legal analytical skills, knowledge of municipal tort law, CPLR, evidentiary issues, and personal injury case evaluation are required. Trial experience and federal court experience are pluses but not prerequisites.

Salary Range: $87,550.00 – $182,310.00
