Job summary

Wagman is seeking an Assistant Controller to support the ATF team in York, PA. This safety-sensitive role will oversee accounting operations, financial planning and analysis, and the financial systems platform, including Datarails implementation.

You will supervise staff, ensure GAAP compliance, and drive close processes across multiple entities. Qualifications include a Bachelor’s in Accounting and 7+ years in accounting/finance with supervisory experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is required.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience with at least 2 years of supervisory responsibility.
  • CPA, MBA or CCIFP is a plus.
  • Experience with Excel, Power Query and multi-sheet models is required.
  • Construction industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience implementing or extending FP&A platforms is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day general accounting and financial reporting.
  • Manage Staff Accountant, Accounting Administrator and AP staff.
  • Lead month-end close for consolidated entities including journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Prepare accurate financial statements and management reports.
  • Support budgeting/forecasting and ad hoc analyses for management.
  • Ensure GAAP compliance and maintain internal controls.

Job description

Position: Assistant Controller

Location: York, PA

Travel: Minimal Travel to job sites as needed

Pay: $100,000 – 125,000 (Based on experience)

We are currently seeking an Assistant Controller support the Company and the Accounting-Tax-Finance (ATF) team.The role is deliberately structured across three areas of responsibility – accounting operations, financial planning and analysis, and financial systems – and the incumbent is accountable for delivering in all three.

This is a safety sensitive position requiring work on construction sites with various safety hazards inherent in heavy construction. This position is subject to drug testing and compliance policies associated with our status as a Federal Contractor.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Accounting Operations and Financial Reporting
  • Supervising and directing day-to-day activities for all general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed asset accounting and financial reporting.
  • Managing the Staff Accountant, Accounting Administrator and the Accounts Payable staff, including mentoring, developing, and retaining those team members.
  • Managing the month-end closing process for a consolidated group of companies, joint ventures and other related entities including making journal entries, preparing account reconciliations and other closing activities.
  • Preparing accurate and timely financial statements and management reports.
  • Managing monthly accounting and reporting for the company’s employee benefit plan.
  • Monitoring, tracking, and ensuring timely filing of regulatory applications including prequalifications and business licenses.
  • Assisting Controller with: Tax compliance related to applicable statutory requirements, including but not limited to federal, state, and local income, real and personal property, franchise, value-added, sales and use and other taxes in all jurisdictions in which the Company operates.
  • Successful completion of external financial audits and tax return preparation, including timely preparation of workpapers, financial statements, and footnotes.
  • Establishing and monitoring compliance with company policies, procedures and internal controls.
  • Ensuring compliance with and maintaining professional education with respect to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Financial Planning and Analysis
  • Owning the Company’s consolidated financial budget/forecast, including driver development, scenario construction, sensitivity analysis and written documentation of underlying assumptions.
  • Coordinating the forecast cycle with division heads and project managers against a published calendar, including the schedule for submission, the required format and level of detail, and the on‑time completion of each cycle.
  • Monitoring submitted budget/forecast for completeness, internal consistency, reconciliation in total to the approved projection, and conformity with Company convention.
  • Performing reasonableness review of forecast phasing, testing the monthly cost and revenue curve against supporting data, and raising questions directly with the responsible division head or project manager where the phasing appears unsupported.
  • Escalating unresolved forecast questions to the Controller and the CFO, together with the supporting analysis.
  • Aggregating operations budgets/forecasts into the Company budget/forecast, reconciling period-over-period movement to project-level drivers, and preparing the monthly forecast update and written variance commentary for management reporting.
  • Providing decision support and ad hoc analysis to the CFO and the Controller.
Financial Systems and Reporting Platform
  • Serving as the single accountable owner of the Company’s Datarails implementation (intended to be the principal tool for all financial reporting, planning and analysis), including scope, sequencing, configuration, testing, user adoption and training, measured against named deliverables and dates.
  • Establishing source-data standards for the department and directing the Senior Staff Accountant’s source-data readiness workstream.
  • Evaluating, piloting and, where warranted, deploying artificial intelligence capabilities within the finance function – including variance commentary drafting, anomaly detection across job cost data, natural-language query of financial data, and document extraction – and exercising judgment as to where such capabilities do and do not add value, in coordination with the Controller and the CFO.
  • Developing, testing and maintaining financial and operational dashboards according to established close schedules.
  • Measuring and reporting on close-cycle time and manual effort displaced by the platform.
  • Participating actively in business process improvement projects.
  • Performing other duties and projects, as assigned.
Education
  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
Experience
  • Candidate should have 7+ years of progressive experience in the field of accounting/finance, including at least two years of direct supervisory responsibility (experience in public accounting is preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience personally designing and building driver‑based financial models in Microsoft Excel is required. Candidates will be asked to walk through the architecture of a model they built from inception.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required, including structured tables, Power Query and multi-sheet model construction.
  • Working knowledge of percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition and work‑in‑process reporting is required.
  • Experience in the construction industry is strongly preferred.
  • Hands‑on experience implementing, administering or materially extending a financial planning and analysis platform (Datarails, Vena, Planful, Workday Adaptive Planning, Anaplan or comparable) is strongly preferred.
  • CPA, MBA or CCIFP is a plus.
  • Experience with Viewpoint V6/Vista construction software is a significant plus.
  • Experience with SQL, Power BI, Tableau or comparable data and visualization tools is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to sit for extended periods while working at a computer performing routine office tasks.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, reaching, and carrying items
  • Must be able to perform simple grasping and fine manipulation tasks with both hands.
  • Must have acceptable corrected vision and hearing.
  • Ability to travel to project sites occasionally.
