Job description

Our client is a leading provider of technology solutions and engineering services supporting the U.S. Federal Government. The company is seeking an Assistant Controller to be a key member of the finance and accounting leadership team and will help oversee the company's day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, month-end close, revenue recognition, internal controls, and compliance.

The ideal candidate will have accounting experience within a federal technology reseller, VAR, solutions integrator, or similar government technology organization. Experience working in an environment with significant hardware, software, subscription, maintenance, and professional services revenue is highly desirable. This role requires someone who can operate at both the technical and operational levels: reviewing complex transactions and reconciliations, managing the close, developing staff, improving processes, and partnering with sales, contracts, operations, and executive leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in leading the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Oversee key general ledger activities, account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and financial statement preparation.
  • Support accounting for a high-volume technology solutions and reseller environment involving hardware, software, SaaS/subscriptions, maintenance, and professional services.
  • Provide leadership around ASC 606 revenue recognition, including analysis of complex customer and vendor arrangements, multiple performance obligations, and timing of revenue recognition.
  • Review customer contracts, purchase orders, vendor agreements, and other transactions to ensure appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Support accounting for vendor rebates, incentives, credits, discounts, and other partner programs common within the technology reseller channel.
  • Oversee and improve accounts receivable, accounts payable, billing, cash application, and related accounting processes.
  • Partner with Sales, Contracts, Operations, and Program Management to ensure transactions are appropriately structured, recorded, billed, and reported.
  • Support accounting and compliance requirements associated with the company's federal government business and contract vehicles.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and documentation.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and support the annual financial statement audit.
  • Assist with cash flow reporting, forecasting, working capital management, and other financial analyses.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop members of the accounting team.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline accounting processes as the organization continues to grow.
  • Support the CFO and senior leadership with special projects, financial analysis, and strategic initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably including experience within a technology reseller, VAR, federal IT solutions provider, systems integrator, or government contractor.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Hands-on experience managing or playing a significant role in the monthly and annual close.
  • Strong knowledge of ASC 606 and revenue recognition.
  • Experience with businesses that sell combinations of hardware, software, subscriptions, maintenance/support, and professional services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Sales, Operations, Contracts, and other non-finance functions.
  • Experience supervising and developing accounting professionals.
  • Strong Excel and financial systems skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a growing, entrepreneurial organization and remain hands-on with accounting details.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with a leading federal technology reseller or solutions provider such as Carahsoft, ePlus, Presidio, World Wide Technology, Red River, DLT Solutions, immixGroup, or a similar organization.
  • Experience supporting federal government customers and understanding the accounting implications of government contract vehicles.
  • Experience with complex technology vendor and OEM relationships.
  • Knowledge of gross versus net revenue presentation/principal-versus-agent considerations under ASC 606.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting system implementations, integrations, or process automation.
  • A background with a combination of public accounting and industry accounting is a plus.
