Qualifications

## Assistant ControllerApply: Irving-Irving Corporate Office-3939 West John Carpenter Freeway: Full time: Posted Today: R00322535Support Center - IrvingThe Assistant Controller will be responsible for directing all Michaels corporate accounting functions, internal financial reporting, and general ledger operations. This position directs and oversees the end-to-end monthly close process, ensures the integrity of financial data, and manages all significant accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, and accounting for non-recurring transactions. Additionally, the Assistant Controller ensures compliance with US GAAP rules and supports the preparation of SEC filings and financial statements for equity holders, lenders, and internal parties. They will serve as a key operational leader driving process improvements, cross-functional accounting initiatives, and technical accounting compliance for Michaels.**Major Activities*** Lead and optimize the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, driving cross-functional coordination to ensure accuracy and meet strict deadlines.* Manage and maintain the integrity of the general ledger structure, overseeing journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and the accurate consolidation of financial data across cost centers and accounts.* Analyze financial variances, trends, and root causes across the general ledger to inform strategic decisions, enhance forecasting accuracy, and ensure proper coding.* Provide strategic leadership and oversight of corporate accounting functions, including lease accounting, fixed asset management, and equity accounting operations.* Lead monthly internal reporting activities, ensuring the timely delivery of actionable financial insights, accurate trial balances, and management reports to business leaders.* Collaborate with Internal Audit to design, implement, and maintain robust internal financial controls and risk mitigation strategies (SOX compliance).* Identify and lead automation and process improvement initiatives within the G/L and corporate accounting workflows to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.* Support the preparation and review of Quarterly and Annual Reports, assisting with SEC filings and other external disclosures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.* Conduct technical accounting research and analysis, advising senior leadership on the operational and G/L impact of emerging accounting issues and business changes.* Serve as a primary liaison with external auditors during routine fieldwork, fostering transparent and collaborative relationships to support audit readiness and smooth review cycles.* Support the preparation of materials for the Audit Committee, ensuring clarity, relevance, and strategic insight.* Partner with cross-functional teams on strategic initiatives, ensuring accounting implications are appropriately addressed and integrated into daily business processes.* Champion a culture of innovation and continuous improvement by coaching and developing a high-performing corporate accounting team, fostering collaboration and problem-solving.* Perform other strategic duties as assigned to support the evolving needs of the organization. **Other duties as assigned****Preferred Education/Experience*** Bachelors or Masters Degree in Accounting* CPA required **Minimum Type of Experience Required*** Minimum of 12 years of overall accounting experience, with a heavy emphasis on corporate accounting, general ledger management, and the month-end close process* Public accounting experience required* Experience managing and developing an accounting team of >5* Retail experience preferred* Proficient in Excel* Strong knowledge of general ledger operations, financial statement consolidation, internal controls, SOX, and US GAAP.* Essbase experience, Oracle experience preferred* Excellent oral and written communication skills.* Familiarity with SEC filing systems (Workiva, Active Disclosure, etc.) is a plus.* Working knowledge of SEC reporting requirements and external filing processes (direct SEC reporting experience is highly preferred but not the sole focus).**Applicants in the U.S. must satisfy federal, state, and local legal requirements of the job.**At The Michaels Companies Inc., our purpose is to fuel the joy of creativity and celebration.
