Job description

Pri-Med is seeking an Assistant Controller to join our Finance & Accounting team, reporting directly to the VP of Finance. This is a high-visibility role for an accounting professional who combines strong technical fundamentals with the business acumen to grow within the organization over time.

The ideal candidate brings a public accounting background and experience in at least one of the following industry areas: pharmaceutical promotion, continuing professional education, B2B media/events or digital marketing. The role also calls for the professional maturity to partner closely with senior operating leaders, including the CEO and Chief Commercial Officer. This position offers a unique opportunity for an ambitious accounting professional to work directly alongside the VP of Finance and Senior Leadership Team to gain deep experience in medical education, pharmaceutical marketing, B2B events and digital media.

This position is based in Boston and offers a hybrid work schedule. Tuesdays and Thursdays are required in-person office days. Our office is conveniently located in Boston’s Back Bay, directly across from the Prudential Center.

Pri-Med is a leading accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), dedicated to advancing clinical practice through high-quality educational programming for primary care professionals across the United States and Canada. With headquarters in Boston, Pri-Med also operates a Canadian subsidiary, adding cross-border accounting and tax complexity to our finance function. Our finance team plays a central role in supporting the organization’s growth, compliance, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the VP of Finance in managing day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, and financial reporting, as well as annual budget preparation and quarterly forecasting.
  • Collaborate with the Finance team at Pri-Med’s corporate parent, Diversified, based in Portland, ME on enterprise-wide financial reporting and system initiatives.
  • Directly manage and mentor the Senior Staff Accountant and provide broader guidance and development support to the wider accounting team.
  • Assist with the accounting and compliance oversight of CME educational grants, including grant revenue recognition, pass-through funding, and compliance with pharmaceutical/industry funder requirements.
  • Partner with the Operations and Finance team on reconciliations, accruals, and internal controls to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Perform project accounting for individual CME events/programs, reconciling actual results against the Operations team's forecast and budget.
  • Contribute to the preparation of financial statements, board materials, and management reporting packages.
  • Assist with tax compliance matters, including coordination with external auditors and tax advisors, as well as support for the Canadian subsidiary's monthly HST tax return filings.
  • Help lead process improvement initiatives across the accounting function, including systems, workflows, and reporting automation.
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships with Operations, HR, and business unit leaders across the organization.
Required Qualifications:
  • 5–6 years of progressive accounting experience, with a foundation in public accounting strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA license required.
  • Prior experience supervising, mentoring or leading accounting staff.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge (US GAAP) with excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Hands-on experience managing the month-end close process and preparing monthly account reconciliations.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and forecasting, along with project accounting experience, including closing out individual events/programs against the Operations team's forecast and budget.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required, particularly advanced Excel skills (a must).
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and build trust with senior executives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in the Boston office on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with NetSuite, Adaptive Planning and/or Workday.
  • Knowledge of or experience with Canadian HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) filings is a plus, given the team's responsibility for accounting and monthly HST tax returns for Pri-Med's Canadian subsidiary.
  • Experience in the CME, medical education, or pharmaceutical industry is a strong plus; familiarity with educational grant accounting and funder compliance requirements is highly valued.
  • We promote work/life balance by offering flexible work schedules, Summer Fridays, Winter Vacation, and paid parental leave.
  • Hybrid work schedule with in-person office days on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Health Benefits: medical, dental & vision, plus a wellness program, which allows employees to earn up to $1,100 per calendar year to help offset the cost of health insurance.
  • 401k with generous company match.
  • Flexible spending accounts, commuter benefits, pet insurance, disability & life insurance.
  • We give back by hosting donation drives and providing volunteer opportunities for our employees.

Diversity is a priority for us. We provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, religion, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $125,000-$150,000 annual base salary, with flexibility for the right candidate. This role is also eligible for an annual bonus of up to 10% dependent on the individual’s performance and the Company’s financial and operating performance. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and qualifications, as well as internal equity and budget considerations. This role also offers potential for growth within the finance organization.
