Job summary

InterMed in South Portland, ME is seeking an experienced finance leader to develop, implement, and maintain internal controls, oversee budgeting, and ensure GAAP-compliant financial reporting across the organization.

You will partner with the CFO and executive team, lead FP&A and audit activities, drive process improvements with Lean Six Sigma, and mentor finance staff to uphold InterMed’s values. This full-time role requires CPA and at least ten years of accounting leadership experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field, with 10+ years of progressive accounting experience required.
  • CPA certification highly preferred or required.
  • Experience leading accounting or finance teams in a healthcare or multi-site organization is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Owns monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes and prepares journal entries, accruals, estimates, reserves, and reconciliations.
  • Leads internal and external financial reporting and annual audit activities.
  • Oversees budgeting and FP&A to provide reliable historical data and reconciled results.
  • Manages treasury, banking relationships, accounts payable, and financing arrangements.

Description

SUMMARY:

Working under the general supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, this position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a system of internal controls and audits that will ensure company assets are adequately safeguarded; development and maintenance of the company’s operational and capital budgets; and that all financial reporting, including corporate taxes, are prepared in compliance with relevant accounting standards, laws, and regulations. Works in close partnership with the Chief Financial Officer and executive leadership team, serving as a trusted advisor on accounting, financial reporting, and control matters and as a critical contributor to enterprise-level financial leadership and decision-making.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Accounting Operations & Monthly Close: Owns and oversees the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, including the close calendar, task assignments, and deadlines. Directs the preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, estimates, reserves, and complex accounting transactions. Reviews and approves account reconciliations and supporting schedules. Ensures GAAP-compliant recording of all transactions.
  • Financial Reporting, Audit & Compliance: Manages internal and external financial reporting and leads the annual audit, including audit work papers, timelines, and liaison with external auditors.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Oversees annual operating and capital budgeting processes. Oversees the FP&A function through the provision of reliable historical data and reconciled results.
  • Treasury & Banking: Oversees banking operations, cash positioning, and reconciliations. Manages accounts payable functions. Supports InterMed’s financing arrangements.
  • Payroll Oversight: Ensures accurate payroll accounting, liabilities, taxes, and accruals. Ensures payroll is executed accurately and in accordance with defined schedules.
  • Leadership & Supervision: Supervises finance and accounting staff while promoting a strong internal control culture.
  • Collaboration & Special Projects: Collaborates across Finance, Operations, and Practice Leadership; performs special projects as assigned. Collaborates with the Director of Payer Contracting and Revenue Cycle leadership to support revenue integrity. Collaborates with Operations Directors and Practice Managers to identify cost-saving and revenue-enhancement opportunities.
  • Strategic Financial Support: Provides financial insight and analysis to support strategic decision-making, including corporate investment strategies.
  • Board & Executive Presentations: Develops and delivers clear, concise, and board-ready financial presentations, including financial statements, variance analysis, and key accounting matters, to support Board and committee meetings.
  • Mission, Vision, and Values: Consistently incorporates InterMed’s mission, vision, and values into the delivery of high-quality services to stakeholders, including patients, physicians, staff, the community, and payers/providers/vendors.
  • Overall accountability and management of colleagues
  • Regularly assess developmental opportunities for colleagues, coach colleagues to enhance performance, and support colleagues in learning and applying new skills and competencies.
  • Coordinate and monitor staffing levels and labor efficiency.
  • Approver for colleague payroll biweekly in accordance with payroll department guidelines and schedule.
  • Mentors and counsels’ colleagues to include initiating Performance Improvement plans.
  • Works with the Compliance and Human Resources teams to assure compliance with State, Federal and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements for colleagues.
  • Leadership

    • Leads Lean Six Sigma initiatives for the department to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
    • Fosters intra-departmental support and collaboration between all sites.

    • Develop and maintain an open and effective line of communication with colleagues.
  • Communication
    • Works in partnership with the clinical teams, practice leadership, and senior leadership teams.
    • Fosters strong working relationships with all levels of the organization to facilitate effective communication and to connect front line colleagues’ daily priorities to the organization’s strategic goals.

    • Strategic Planning and Program Coordination
    • Assess current state of department with relation to existing InterMed goals and plans.
    • Develops proactive plans to ensure InterMed’s positioning as a leader in healthcare in alignment with company KPIs.
    • Monitors budgets to identify potential financial overruns and variances; makes appropriate recommendations to alleviate financial implications.
    • Champions interdepartmental problem solving.
    • Ensures appropriate departmental policy development and adherence.
  • Confidentiality
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines. Maintain confidentiality related to financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and/or colleagues. Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.
    • Maintains strict confidentiality in alignment with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines and InterMed policies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field, with 10+ years of progressive accounting experience required.

Experience:

  • Three to five years of direct people management experience required, including leading, coaching, and developing accounting or finance professionals.
  • Experience using data analytics to inform decision making is required.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal with individuals at all levels within the organization.
  • Excellent time management, organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues, by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulations, and/or government law.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting. Knowledge of accounting and budgeting software applications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required. Advanced Excel modeling is essential.
  • Able to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to demonstrate and uphold InterMed’s Values.

License/Certifications:

  • Certified Public Account (CPA) required.

The estimated compensation range is the budgeted amount for this position. Final offers are based on various factors, including skill set, experience, location, qualifications, and other job-related reasons. Certain positions may be eligible for incentive compensation plans above and beyond base compensation.
