Job description

Overview

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Assistant Controller to join our Finance & Accounting team. This individual will play a critical role in the company’s financial reporting and accounting operations and will be expected to independently manage and complete the monthly financial close process accurately and on schedule.

The Assistant Controller will oversee key accounting functions within a multi-entity organization, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, account reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls. This position requires someone who can work independently, identify issues, understand the underlying accounting, and take ownership of the numbers rather than simply preparing information for someone else to review.

The ideal candidate is a strong technical accountant with excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, project-oriented business environment.

Responsibilities

Monthly Financial Close & Financial Reporting

  • Own and independently complete the monthly financial close process from start to finish.

  • Establish and maintain a disciplined monthly close schedule and ensure deadlines are consistently met.

  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow information.

  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, deferrals, prepaids, fixed assets, and other month-end adjustments.

  • Perform and review balance sheet account reconciliations and investigate unusual or unexpected activity.

  • Analyze monthly financial results and identify significant variances, trends, and issues.

  • Ensure accounting transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with GAAP and company policies.

  • Work with operational leaders to resolve accounting and financial reporting issues.

  • Provide management with meaningful financial analysis and explanations of monthly results.

  • Continuously improve the efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of the close process.

Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable

  • Manage and oversee the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.

  • Ensure vendor invoices are accurately coded, approved, and processed timely.

  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and work with appropriate personnel to resolve outstanding balances.

  • Establish appropriate procedures and controls surrounding AP and AR.

  • Monitor cash receipts, disbursements, and working capital.

  • Ensure proper cutoff and accruals for AP and AR at month-end.

  • Identify opportunities to improve cash flow, collections, and payment processes.

Annual Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Support and progressively assume leadership of the annual budgeting process in coordination with department and business leaders.

  • Develop detailed budgets and financial forecasts based on operational plans and historical performance.

  • Coordinate budget submissions, review assumptions, and challenge variances when appropriate.

  • Prepare budget-to-actual reporting and analysis throughout the year.

  • Assist management with forecasting revenue, expenses, staffing, cash flow, and other key financial metrics.

  • Maintain and update financial models used for budgeting, forecasting, and management decision-making.

Internal Controls & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

  • Identify weaknesses or inefficiencies in accounting processes and implement improvements.

  • Ensure appropriate documentation and support for significant accounting transactions.

  • Help develop standardized processes and reporting across the organization.

  • Collaborate with internal software development teams to enhance accounting applications, automate workflows, improve financial reporting capabilities, and support technology-driven process improvements.

Audit & Compliance

  • Assist with annual audits and provide requested schedules and supporting documentation.

  • Coordinate audit requests and ensure timely delivery of supporting information.

  • Coordinate the collection and preparation of financial, payroll, and operational data required for insurance renewals and related compliance reporting.

  • Support compliance with company accounting policies and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • 5-7+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably including experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or Senior Accounting Manager role.

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation.

  • Demonstrated experience independently managing a monthly close process.

  • Experience with multi-entity accounting and intercompany transactions preferred.

  • Experience managing or overseeing AP and AR functions.

  • Strong budgeting and forecasting experience.

  • Advanced Excel skills and strong proficiency with accounting/ERP systems.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

CPA designation is preferred but not required.
