Job summary

The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney in Virginia Beach seeks an attorney to prosecute misdemeanors and some felonies in Circuit and District Courts. You will conduct legal research, interview witnesses, negotiate with defense counsel, and prepare briefs and memoranda of law.

Responsibilities

  • Prosecute misdemeanors and some felonies in Circuit and District Courts.
  • Conduct legal research, interviews, and negotiate with defense counsel.

Apply now to join an organization where you truly make a difference.Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney is responsible for prosecuting those charged with violating the criminal laws of Virginia in Virginia Beach. This is a grant-funded position specifically targeted at prosecuting weapons offenses and related firearms cases.Duties include:Attorney will effectively prosecute misdemeanors and some felonies in Circuit and District Courts by conducting legal research, witness interviews, negotiating with defense counsel, preparing jury instructions, and presenting cases at trial.Attorney will prepare legal briefs and memoranda of law.Attorney will establish effective relationships with office personnel, judicial agencies, victims and witnesses, law enforcement officers and the public.Attorneys will maintain accurate files, documenting in writing major or significant actions, and provide sufficient justification to support recommendations.Attorneys will prepare briefs in opposition to petitions for appeals to the Court of Appeals.Please note that residency in the City of Virginia Beach is not a requirement. However, contingent offers may be made to those who are registered to take the next scheduled Virginia Bar Exam (February or July) and pass the Exam, or those who intend to waive in for licensure in Virginia, or those who were previously licensed in the Commonwealth and are scheduled to complete the required CLE hours for license reinstatement.
