Job summary

The Assistant Coach position at Hagerstown Community College assists the Head Coach with all aspects of running a college sports team, including recruitment, practice management, game management, academic monitoring and fundraising.

The role participates in NJCAA and the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference, and requires CPR/AED and Mental Health First Aid certification, plus completion of the NJCAA handbook/casebook exam at the start of each season.

Qualifications

  • College degree preferred; two years related experience.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Excellent communication and ability to work with students, staff and coaches.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Head Coach with recruitment of student athletes from the service area.
  • Assist in conducting well organized practices and provide conditioning and skill training.
  • Monitor academic progress and support student athletes' academic success.
  • Lead outreach to high school coaches and initiate contact with athletes.
  • Support transfer coaching to four-year institutions in coordination with Athletics staff.

SUMMARY STATEMENT

The Assistant Coach position is responsible for assisting the Head Coach with all aspects of running a college sports team/program. Responsibilities include recruitment, practice management, game management, academic monitoring and fundraising. Hagerstown Community College participates in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Works within HCC's and the Athletic Department's policies and procedures to accomplish goals.
  • Demonstrate values of a life-long learner and focuses on student success academically before team success.
  • Assist the Head Coach with recruitment of student athletes from HCC's service area that are capable of benefiting from a community college education and athletic program.
  • Assess the physical abilities, academic background and personal character of the senior athletes in HCC's service area.
  • Initiate personal contact with the high school coaches and each athlete.
  • Assist the Head Coach in conducting well organized practices and provides for the physical conditioning and skill training for each athlete.
  • Monitor academic progress and participation in an academic support program for student athletes.
  • Develop an understanding of student financial aid options and works with the Director of Athletics & ARCC to obtain updates that may impact player eligibility.
  • Assist athletes in transferring to a four-year institution in cooperation with the Coordinator of Athletic Advising and Eligibility.
  • Serve as a positive role model for student athletes.
  • Uses the dedicated service approach and a high level of respect, tact and courtesy in dealing with student athletes, other coaching staff, officials, college staff members and the community.
  • Possess good work habits such as punctuality, attendance, dependability, cooperation and enthusiasm.
  • Be familiar with college policies and have a professional knowledge of the employee, student and student worker handbooks as well as the academic and college calendars.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • College Degree preferred; Two years related experience.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to handle both themselves and the student athletes in an appropriate manner which is in line with college expectations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with administrative staff, deans, faculty, coaches, student athletes and the general public.
  • All coaches will be required to be CPR/AED certified; Mental Health First Aid certified and take the NJCAA handbook/casebook exam at the beginning of each season.
