Job summary

Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ is seeking an Assistant Powerlifting Coach to support the growth of the club powerlifting program. You will assist with daily team operations, athlete development, strength training, competition preparation, and program management.

The ideal candidate has experience in powerlifting, strength and conditioning, coaching, and working with athletes in collegiate settings.

Qualifications

  • Previous competitive powerlifting experience and/or coaching experience.
  • Strong knowledge of powerlifting techniques, programming, and competition rules.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and motivate student-athletes.
  • Commitment to athlete safety and development.
  • Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends based on team schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach with planning and conducting team practices, strength training sessions, and skill development activities.
  • Provide instruction and feedback on proper powerlifting techniques, including squat, bench press, and deadlift mechanics.
  • Support athlete development through individualized coaching, goal setting, and performance feedback.
  • Assist with creating and implementing training programs based on athlete experience levels and competition goals.
  • Monitor athlete progress and help track training performance, meet preparation, and strength improvements.
  • Promote proper lifting techniques, injury prevention strategies, and safe training practices.
  • Assist with competition preparation, including meet planning, athlete weigh-ins, warm-up procedures, and meet-day coaching.
  • Travel with the team to select competitions as needed.
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and retention efforts for student participants.
  • Support team administrative responsibilities, including communication, scheduling, equipment organization, and program needs.
  • Maintain a positive team culture that promotes sportsmanship, accountability, inclusion, and student development.
  • Follow all Stevens Institute of Technology, Campus Recreation, and club sports policies and procedures.

Job Description

Stevens Institute of Technology is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Assistant Powerlifting Coach to support the growth and development of the club powerlifting program.

The Assistant Coach will assist with daily team operations, athlete development, strength training, competition preparation, and overall program management.

This position works closely with the Head Coach and Campus Recreation staff to provide a positive, safe, and competitive environment for student-athletes.

The ideal candidate will have experience in powerlifting, strength and conditioning, coaching, and working with athletes in a collegiate or competitive setting.

Qualifications Required
  • Previous competitive powerlifting experience and/or coaching experience.
  • Strong knowledge of powerlifting techniques, programming, and competition rules.

  • Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends based on team schedules.
Preferred
  • Collegiate coaching experience.
  • Experience coaching athletes with varying skill levels.
  • Experience preparing athletes for USAPL, USPA, or similar powerlifting competitions.
  • CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain).
Schedule & Compensation

Approximately 15 hours per week. Schedule will primarily consist of evening practices, athlete development sessions, administrative support, and occasional weekend competitions. Hours may fluctuate throughout the academic year based on training cycles and competition schedules.

Reporting Structure

The Assistant Powerlifting Coach reports directly to the Head Powerlifting Coach and works collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Club Sports.

Department Club Sports Compensation Range

In compliance with the New Jersey Wage Transparency Act, the hourly base range for this position is $16.00-$16.00 per hour. This range represents the University’s good faith estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Stevens Institute of Technology determines compensation based on factors including the position’s scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s experience, education, skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational considerations. The final salary will be set considering departmental budget, qualifications, and relevant credentials. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes additional forms of compensation, such as incentives, stipends, or other applicable pay components.
