The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code, and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency, and professionalism.

This position helps manage a unit responsible for inspecting buildings, construction, repairs, or alterations of structures for conformity with NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, laws, and approved plans.

Under Direction
  • Assist in managing a unit responsible for conducting efficient and effective inspections. Assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinates. Provide positive leadership and development to inspectors.
  • Directly supervise Supervising Inspectors managing field inspectors.
  • Inform senior staff of issues requiring intervention.
  • Meet regularly with inspectors to address concerns.
  • Hold monthly meetings with unit personnel to review operations.
  • Deploy personnel to maximize efficiency and service.
  • Explain and enforce relevant laws and rules.
  • Testify as needed at ECB, depositions, and court.
  • Maintain records and reports.
  • Coordinate activities with divisions and agencies.
  • Act as backup to the Chief Inspector for reviewing and signing Emergency Declarations and Vacate Orders.
  • Represent the Chief Inspector professionally with leadership, the public, and agencies.
  • Issue and rescind stop work orders as needed.
  • Plan and conduct surveys and investigations.
  • Determine unsafe building conditions for engineering review.
  • May operate a motor vehicle in performance of duties.
Remote Work

This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week under the Remote Work Pilot Program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of full-time experience in construction trades or related work, or
  • A license as a professional engineer, registered architect, or Site Safety Manager, or
  • Sixty college credits in relevant fields, or
  • One year of experience plus formal training in construction, or
  • Completion of a two-year apprenticeship in construction or inspection, or
  • Equivalent education/experience.

For higher assignment levels, additional experience or education is required.
